“The BeeTour is a MUST for al that like nature!”

The Beehive - Beetours
Ranked #12 of 14 Tours in Mindo
Reviewed 2 June 2014

I did the tour! And i will never forget this moment when opening the hive and the smell of honey coming in my nose an ingo saying "Hey ladies, how is work?"
We spent 5 hours together as i could not get enough of all this buzzing and working.
And Ingo agreed and we went on to the next apiary down the road or in the mountains.
You need to book the adventure a day in advance, hoping there is time for the tour. Also 25$ seems like a high price, but it is more than worth it. A beekeeping course costs more, an you will by far not learn that much and with so much laughing and joking.
We have only been two (ingo and me) but as far as i know he can take up to 3 max. And more would be too much anyway.
Ingo seems to be a beekeeper by passion. He likes his LADIES and he likes to give them all they need to do a good job. The honey i tried was delicious. He has various apiarys in and around mindo, so there is some driving included in all of that, but the time spent in the car (maybe 60min max) he tells his stories and shares his knowledge. So no time wasted.
You normaly meet for the tour in their coffee place in Mindo. Also a very recomendable place to enjoy a beverage and a chat with his very nice and extremely helpfull wife.
I hope they keep up what they are doing - it is a unpayable adventure.

We are very happy you enjoyed the "Ladies". They are flying a lot right now bringing lots of nectar and pollen in. Help is needed! Thanks for the nice words. Ingo

..... for this most amazing adventure.
I walked in The Beehive Cafe after listening to some stories about it in Canoa to have a beverage.
After the best coffee i have had on my trip so far, Ingo - the owner and beehkeeper - put on the beesuit to do some work on the hives, and i spontanously joined him for the beetour.
All dressed up we got in the car and drove to the first apiary. Ingo was talking and telling about bees all the time. He knows everything you can imagine about the "little ladies" as he calls them.
We took hives apart and checked for queen, brood and co. we tried some honey right out of the comb, we positioned some new hives. we did all you could do with bees i imagine.
I am a bit scared about bees in general, but with the suit, the veil and the gloves there is no danger involved in this adventure.

It felt great to get back to the store and over an espresso let this great adventure pass. I feel almost special about having been able to do this.

Ingo and Genny are also very knowledgable about Mindo and Ecuador and South America. You need infos - they have them.

This is my first reference i left on tripadvisor - but this attarction needs to bee spread around the world. 3.5 hours of honey, fun and edutainment.

Hey! I am so happy you liked it. Rooftop beekeeping is legal all over NYC now. Go for it man - nature and mankind will thank you!

Me, my wife and our two children (8&13) went with Ingo, the owner of The Beehive Cafe, on his beetour.

At the beginning we have been a bit scared, but when we saw the suits and hats and gloves, and listened to Ingo talk about "those amazing and important ladies" we decided to hook up for the next morning.

We met at 9 in their cafe (a very nice and cosy cafe where you can also eat very good) and got a 1 hour introduction about the live of bees, the job of a beekeeper, bee-problems and EVERYTHING you can imagine.
This guy is so enthusiastic and funny, even our kids listened with the biggest eyes i have ever seen on them.
After this very informative talk (which he did for us in german, but he can also do it in english, spanish and french), we got in his car and drove about 15 minutes to the first bee-site.

Dressed and ready to face the crowd we started taking the first hive apart. Lid off, honey box off, first frame out - amazing. Thousends of bees crawling around. Our bigger one was operating the smoker, and the small one could not get his nose out of the box, bugging Ingo with hundrets of questions.
This tall beekeeper answered every single one of the questiones in a very knowledgable and child friendly way - we have been amazed and still talk about it.
My wife went on the queen hunt on the frames, i checked for deseases with him and the kids had bees  crawling all over them.

After the first two hives we took a ride to the next apiary. There was another 6 hives and we inspected 3 more. We made splits (little hives), counted polen bees coming in an tasted some honey right off the comb.

Everything happened very slow and peacefull, there was a explanation about everything you can imagine, and at the end we felt like beeing ready to get bees ourselfs.

We can only recommend this Bee tour with this gentle, funny and knowledgable giant. It was one of the most amazing things we have ever done or seen.

You need to book it a day in advance and the weather needs to be nice. And when he tells you to go pee before starting - go pee before starting. When you get all excited and carried away checking the bees doing so can be a problem.

Mindo is a small town for birders, adventure-things and nature. The beetour is the highlight of all of them!!!!

Afterwards my wife could practice her spanish and french with Genny (Ingo's wife), we ate a late lunch platter and had coffe and cake - with honey.

Thanks so much for this great experience and we hope they keep up the great effort they make with everyone walking in their store.
Best from "the german gang"

It makes us very happy we could waken your interest in bees. Those little ladies are so important - maybe you want to become a beekeeper too. Drop me a line when you have a question or need advice. It was a pleasure to have you guys around.
