“Best Lodging in Mindo”
Reviewed 28 January 2009

My son and I stayed at Caskaffesu for 2 weeks in December and were so impressed with the helpful owners, the room, the food and the location. It is in the middle of town, walking distance to an internet cafe, stores, restaurants and the countryside. My son is a birder and we met a very friendly couple there that took him birding around the area, and we were introduced by the owners of Caskaffesu. The owners were very knowledgeable about how to get to area attractions, back to Quito or any other information you might need, and Susan is an American. Her English is very good:-)

Our room had 2 large size beds in it, a modern bathroom with lots of hot water, a bench for our luggage and a hat rack to hang things on. Everything is new, very clean and spotless, and a bargain at $16.50/night per person and that includes breakfast and taxes.

We looked at several other places in Mindo before picking this one, and we are so happy we did. We got much more than a room and breakfast, we made friends and enjoyed our time there very much.

We stayed in Mindo for three nights. The first two nights we stayed at Cabanas Armonia, which we enjoyed but had more of a rustic feel, so we decided to stay at CasKaffeSu on our last night. We had eaten dinner there the first night and had a great dinner. The owners, Susan and Luis, were wonderful. Susan is an American and Luis is Ecuadorian, and both are extremely friendly. Our room was extremely clean, nicely decorated, and the bathroom was wonderful (steady hot water, which was great!) It was $16.80 per person per night, which included all taxes and breakfast. Cabanas Armonia was $14 per person per night, and it was well worth the additional $2.80 per person per night to stay in a more comfortable place. CasKaffeSu is located right off of the main street, so the location is convenient as well.

Susan and Luis went out of their way on a number of occasions - they let us keep our bags there while we waited for the people in our room to check out, and we were able to go explore until the afternoon. They let us check out late on Monday (probably wouldn't be possible on a weekend as they get busy) as our bus left at 2PM. She had another group staying that were headed to the canopy tours and arranged for us all to go up together, saving us a few dollars. Just all around very helpful and kind!

The food is also very good as well - and it's nice to have a convenient place to eat right there.

Can't recommend this place enough!

We visited Mindo for one night. We already had a room booked elsewhere and so, sadly, we were not able to stay there but did eat there for every meal and the food was excellent -- especially the large, warm hot chocolates on a rainy afternoon. Wonderful atmosphere, lovely building. Highly recommend this place. The owners made you feel at home.

Caskaffesu Hostel/B&B www.caskaffesu.com and Mindo was the last destination in Ecuador of our 12 day visit. My family of four (teenage daughter of 13 and 19 year old son) loved Mindo and Caskaffesu. The owners Susan and Luis were extremely friendly, helpful and wonderful hosts. We had adjoining rooms with a shared bath. Our kids room had 2 double beds and our room had a king size bed. Both rooms were very, very comfortable, clean and cheerful! We ate many of our meals at the restaurant and everything we ordered was delicious. The breakfast was included in our room rate. Mindo is a small, safe town with mostly restaurants and small hotels & hostels. The first night we walked to a nearby hotel to listen to a frog concert. The second day we took a cable ride above the mountain canopy in order to hike to several waterfalls. The third day my daughter and I did the canopy zip lines. And the morning of the fourth day we walked to the butterfly farm. We had originally planned 2 nights but stayed 3 nights and are very glad we did. There are many outdoor activities to do around Mindo. You can take a bus from Quito to Mindo for $2.50 and it takes about 2 ½ hours. We hired a driver for $70 and it took 1 ¾ hours. We used www.mindotravel.com. If you want to see where else we stayed in Ecuador during our 12 days check out Tripadvisor (Ali-Shungu Otavalo, San Jorge Eco-Lodge Quito, JW Marriott Quito).

The price, the food, the accomodations and the owners/operators, Susan and Luis, can't be beat. Sitting on their porch, reading a book, drinking one of their great smoothies and watching it rain, was one of my favorite memories of my recent vacation. The rain part was so welcome because I live in the desert! Jackie

I certainly would not consider CasKaffeSu a typical Hostal. My 4 friends and I stayed there for a night in June and had the time of our lives. Susan and Luis are fantastic people. Hospitable doesn't even begin to describe them.

CasKaffeSu is clean and has excellent food. The meals were so reasonable, delicious and the dessert was to die for! The banana bread and brownies are a must have while staying there.

Overall, our time in Mindo was special due to the warmth and hospitality of Susan and Luis.

CasKaffeSu is attractive, colorful, comfortable, and only a year old. Hosts Susan and Luis were friendly and helpful. The hotel is in the town itself, and so has easy access to small stores, etc. Mindo is a tiny town and so it is quiet at the hotel.

We had a room with a king-size bed; our daughter had a separate room and we shared the bathroom. Cost was $20 per night per person, including breakfast, for this set of two rooms [other rooms are less expensive.]

There is very limited off-street parking, but that probably doesn't matter in Mindo.
