“Great Hostel with amazing views”
Reviewed 7 April 2013

The dorm is very spacious and the view from the balcony is amazing. You get to see the surf break from there and you can decided if you want to surf it or not. Joos (the owner) is very hospitable and very friendly. I was supposed to be there for 2 nights and stayed for 12. If you are looking for a quieter option in Montanita, away from the noisy bad music of the town...go to Punto Verde.

Room Tip: The walk up the hill is not as bad as it looks. Trust me Im not athletic ;)

I'll start with the hostess: Joos Fleskens has changed my life. She acquired the land a few years ago and has built an incredible jungle getaway that is green in every aspect. She built most of the buildings herself, she keeps the fridge stocked with Pilsener, she has the most interesting stories, and welcomes guests and their opinions into her home graciously. She is knowledgable about the town and can make excellent recommendations in Montanita, Guayaquil, and many other places in Ecuador....and the world for that matter.

The grounds: Do not be daunted by the walk up the hill- it gets shorter every trip you make, and the view from the top is worth a hike ten times as long (some cabs will drive right up to the house, but not all). There is a main house that is set up dormitory style with single beds and bunks, each with a mosquito net and large lock box. There is a balcony with stools, tables, and hammocks that overlooks the ocean and is the absolute perfect place to watch the sun set. The only private room (who is where my boyfriend and I stayed), I've taken to calling it the love hut, is a separate cabin about 5 meters from the main house. It has a thatch roof, a full size (I think) bed, a few shelves, 2 racks with hangers, 2 windows, a mosquito net, a lock for the door, and a beautiful view. Everything a couple needs!

There is a large kitchen with a gas stove in a separate building. A simple and delicious breakfast is included, and guests are permitted to use the kitchen as their own. I recommend taking advantage of the amazing fresh seafood, cooking it up in the kitchen, and enjoying it with a cold beer or distinctive wine (which Joos sells by the bottle in the hostal) in the breeze on the balcony.

The bathrooms are rustic, and water conservation is taken very seriously, but with a composting toilet you never have to worry about flushing!

The hostal is located just North of Montanita (follow the main road, veer off to the right towards Olon, and you'll see the Punto verde sign and driveway on your right). It is walkable, though if you have a heavy load, or are traveling at night you may want to consider a $3 taxi from town. It is a bit removed from downtown Montanita, but this allows you to really connect with the beauty and tranquility of the natural surroundings, and you cannot be displeased with the ever present sound of breaking waves.

Oh, did I forget to mention that it's only $10 a night?!

In the end, if you're a glamour gal who likes hour long hot showers, this is not the place for you. However if you enjoy the outdoors and meeting interesting people, this is heaven!

P.S.- If you're a cat lover, this is definitely the place for you! Two wonderfully playful and loving cats, Hombre and Bebe, live here.
