“Magical river trip”
Reviewed 11 April 2013

From the outset the arrangements for travelling to the boat were excellent - everything was well organised and we received a great welcome on arrival on the Manatee. Each day provided an adventure of a different type experiencing the rainforest, wildlife and meeting some of the local people who live on the river. Our guides were very impressive, knowledgeable and highly informative. Life aboard the Manatee was comfortable in our cabin with a good powerful shower and airconditioning. Delicious food was served every day to complete the experience.
A trip on the Manatee cannot be recommended too highly.

The most fantastic experience of our lives. We spent 8 days on board and enjoyed every moment. The crew were brilliant and the chef created the most fantastic meals. Our guides Raul and Milton were absolutely brilliant. Hope to go back one day.

Room Tip: We had Jaguar room on top of the boat. Fantastic.

It was a delightful trip. The boat crew were exceptional in their concern for our comfort and care. The effort made to give us authentic meals was much more than I have found on other trips. Plus, the food was wonderful. I was impressed with the knowledge of the guides and their delight in sharing that knowledge. Our side trips were enjoyable and informative. I appreciated the effort made to keep us informed about our daily outings and educate us as to what we could expect to see. I do admit that I expected to see more of the wildlife that was mentioned. We saw lots of birds and monkey in the tops of the trees but not the dolphins, river otters or anacondas. That was not the fault of the crew or guides but rather a fact that they are not often spotted.
I was the most glorious boat ride I have had.

We spent 4 days of the Manatee and can't stop talking about our experience in the Amazon. We were met at the Quito airport by the representative of the Manatee who expedited our airline check-in and helped with our luggage. After our flight we were met in Coca by the local guides and taken to the motorized canoes. That was the beginning of our adventure. Each day we spent time in the canoe, exploring the river and looking for animals and plants. We went on night walks, looked for caiman in the river, spotted birds, saw a boa constrictor waiting for a parrot to land and a plethora of other animals. Our guides were excellent. Milton and Raul spotted animals and were able to show us where they were in the jungle (No small feat to get us to see a sloth at the top of a tree in the thick leaves!) They knew so much and provided such insight. We walked through the jungle, had a barbeque in the rain, and explored the Amazon with our guides.
The rooms on the Manatee are very nice and extremely comfortable. Each morning music is played in your room to help you rise and shine. I particularly enjoyed the listening to Elvis on the speaker! The food was fabulous and plentiful.
The trip is accessible to all types of people. My mother is 75 and she was worried about her ability to participate in the excursions. The guides were extremely helpful and she was able to participate fully. This is a marvelous experience and so fun!

We were privileged to be aboard the Manatee Explorer for 8 days, from 11th – 18th February this year. The boat manager, Fausto, leads a very able crew for whom nothing is too much trouble in the attempts to please their guests. The first to mention are the pilot on the bridge, who maintains his position for the greater part of each day and the motorised canoe driver, Rodrigo. Both are to be commended in their skill, dexterity and expertise in navigating their respective crafts through varying and sometimes difficult water conditions. Dario and Jose the bartenders / waiters should also be highlighted for their contribution to looking after their guests.

During our trip we travelled along the Napo River to the borders of Peru and back again whilst navigating adjacent tributaries. Our guides, Raul and Pedro, showed a passion for their work and workplace which was unparalleled. They showed us the wildlife of the region, animals and birds, flora and fauna with a great knowledge as well as educating us culturally regarding the indigenous people that we would meet on our journey. It was of course, difficult not to share their passion as everyday we felt the wish to reach out and touch and be touched by the serene tranquillity and beauty of this incredible corner of our planet. It was a fantastic experience.

Each day when we returned to the riverboat from our excursions we were greeted by the crew with snacks and drinks followed by meals which would grace the table at any top class London restaurant. Carlos, the chef, should command any number of Michelin stars they should wish to award him!

This adventure, in overview, was a spectacular journey in every way and warrants a special part in our memory which will remain with us forever. We cannot recommend the Manatee Explorer experience highly enough. It was 5 stars all the way.

We could not fault this excellent cruise which was good value as well. The staff were delightful and the two naturalists in particular were extremely knowledgable. It was a brilliant introduction to both the flora and fauna of the region alongside becoming acquainted with the lives of the people who live along the Napo river; we particularly enjoyed our visits to a school and a stilted house and smallholding next to the river.

My wife and I are both teachers in Quito. We don't have much time to plan our trips. Fortunately this company arranged a wonderful Amazon trip for us. After a few emails and a wiretransfer we were on our way.

Positives:
- Spacious rooms, comfy beds, a/c
- our guides Pedro and Raul were super knowledgeable, and readily admitted when they didn't know something without pretense.
- internet
- delicious food
- saw lots of animals

Negatives:
- didn't know there would be kids on the trip. They were nice, but noisy on some of the walks thus scaring away some animals.
- trekking with older people who complained about the hikes.
- 4th day consisted of a boat ride back to Coca. Shouldn't be advertised as 4 day/3 night. More like 3 day.

A little pricey but overall worth it. Would do it again.
