My wife and I stayed for a few days at La Selva Lodge recently, and the experience was all we hoped it would be and more. Everything was perfect: when the time came to fill out the comment cards at the end of our stay, we couldn't think of any suggestions about how to improve the lodge, staff, service or experience!

Guests are put into groups according to language and interests, and each group is assigned two guides: one naturalist and one native guide. The guides then decide what the group will do on any given day. You might take a canoe ride, go on a jungle hike, visit the butterfly farm or go to the observation tower, for example. It all depends on weather, time of day, where the animals will probably be, etc. These excursions are all included in the price. We loved the hikes and especially the canoe trips! I get vertigo sometimes but I was still able to climb the observation tower.

The lodge itself is great. It's amazing how they can create and operate such a comfortable lodge in such a remote place. The rooms were airy and clean. The food was delicious.

Of course, the wildlife was spectacular. We saw five species of monkey, countless birds including macaws, toucans and parrots, and reptiles including caimans and snakes. There were insects, but they didn't bother us: the guide told us that mosquitoes can't breed in the water in the lagoon.

What surprised me was the level of community involvement. They don't necessarily talk about it much - usually the guides focus on the plants and animals, but when I asked they told me how involved with the local communities they are. It's more than just providing work for local natives; the lodge supports local schools, sends volunteers into communities and even is helping one nearby village set up, market and run its own ecolodge.

I can't recommend La Selva enough. Check it out! You won't regret it!

    Christopher M,

We really appreciate all the great things you had to say about La Selva. What we appreciate even more is when others notice the little things. La Selva is not just about high-end accommodations and service in the jungle. It is also about giving back to the surrounding communities that allow us to be located where we are. Many times it is easy to forget about the effects of tourism in areas such as the Ecuadorian Amazon. Understanding that, it is very important that we offer opportunities to the communities around us and lend them a helping hand, after all, it is their home that they are allowing us to operate in. Thank you so much for choosing La Selva and once again, we are so elated that you enjoyed your stay and got to see a glimpse of the amazing flora and fauna found within.

    Kindest Regards,

    La Selva

Just completed 4 night 5 day stay at la Selva Lodge. It was a delightful experience including jungle walks and canoe explorations. The bilingual guide and native guide had an extensive knowledge of the area and were most interested in making our stay enjoyable. The cabins are well in tune with the environment updated and comfortable. The food was excellent with an amazing presentation and variety. Intimate ratio of guests gives a pleasant quite repose to this unique location.

Fanstastic trip for age ranges 6-70 in our family! Individual, enthusiastic, and genuine client care by the entire staff. Excellent and diverse itinerary with something for everyone. Feels like stepping into National Geographic.

Room Tip: Rainforest sounds lull you to sleep and howler monkeys help wake you up, no matter where you are.

We just spent five days and four nights at La Selva. It was awesome. We had a fantastic time and would recommend it highly. We saw tons of wildlife up close, especially monkeys. What we liked best:

    - The lodge was super cool. Great design and well maintained.
    - Our cabana was fun! You sleep under a mosquito net and it is nice and cool at night.
    - Our nature guides were fun and knowledgeable
    - The staff and service were really, really great
    - The food was fantastic. Especially considering that this is a very remote place. Couldn't believe how good the food was. Biggest surprise.

    Warnings:

    - This is the jungle. It is hot and sweaty. If you don't like hot and sweaty don't go here. It is not hot at night but there is always a slight dampness.
    - If you are really afraid of nasty things like big spiders and aggressive ants don't go here.
    - The internet is really slow. I was surprised they had it at all. If you need a place with a really good internet connection don't go here.

Our family of three loved it. We did the Galapagos the week before, and between the two trips, we felt like our 13 year old son got a semester long in-the-field nature course that we all loved. Would go back in a second!

Thank you La Selva for a fantastic experience!

All aspects of our six day stay at La Selva were superb. Our room, # 11, was open to evening breezes, spacious, and private. Food was very good. Coordination of airport transfers/pickup well done. We opted to have a private guide/naturalist and accompanying native guide during our stay. They made every effort to meet our desires for a truly memorable rainforest experience and did so in every manner. We did the standard jungle walks and canoe trips around the lodge but also traveled to hike in Yasuni Nat'l Park and to Panacocha to view a totally different jungle environment. Originally we were scheduled to stay at Napo but our travel company, Globus/Avalon changed the stay to Sacha Lodge without notifying us. We only found out about the change by happenstance three weeks before our trip and decided to change on our own to La Selva afer checking out both web sites. Received a full refund from Avalon for this part of our Machu Picchu/Galapagos/Amazon trip and in retrospect the change really was a great one for us, our experiences at La Selva and it's beautiful location could not have been better.

Room Tip: # 11, upper level, twin beds, was great because it is one of the few rooms open to breezes, and is farthest from the dining/bar area and spacious. Sounds of the rainforest were prevalent through the day & night, the howler monkey's in the early morning were a great alarm clock to signal the coming dawn.
