“Excellent Jungle Adventure”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 July 2013

We spent four days at the Sani Lodge and had a fantastic experience. This place is NOT posh--this is no spa retreat in the jungle. BUT, if you want to meet wonderful people, see rainforest up close, learn about the life of the indigeneous rainforest dwellers, while eating and sleeping well and feeling quite safe--this is the place. We awoke each day at 5:30 and were at breakfast by 6:00! But it was worth it. Our guide, Fredy, spoke perfect English but had grown up in the jungle hunting wild pigs with grandfather and uncles. He showed us where to find good tasting ants to eat (for real!) and what vines contain clear water you can drink. We saw Toucans, squirrel monkeys, wooly monkeys, caimon, walking stick insects, scorpions, etc. Fredy was good company and answered questions about how his community was organized, cultural expectations, family life etc. On the third day, Fredy took us to his community and we met his Mom and Dad and saw their coffee farming. Then they cooked lunch for us--fresh fish packed into a paste made from hearts of palm and wrapped in a banana leaf. I have literally never tasted anything more delicious! We also ate some roasted beetle larvae, which I don't long to eat again, but it was interesting. Staff was friendly, food at the lodge was very good. They have a small library, spotty wi-fi, and a full bar. The rooms are like camping--bare wood with a thatched roof, clean and strurdy but no decorative touches. Electricity operates for five hours daily. The showers offer a crazy trickle of sometimes scorching, then suddenly cold water. So, don't come if you really want the Red Door. But do come if you are curious and open hearted and want to get up close and personal with one of the richest ecosystems on the planet.

Room Tip: There is a lodge house that contains four units. The walls don't go all the way to ceiling so...

We stayed 4 days & 3 nights at Sani, after birding the eastern cloud forests. Sani is a great experience and visiting there supports the Yasuni community with sustainable income and the visibility they need to oppose the oil companies that are trying to move in. The lodge is comfortable, staff friendly and genuinely proud of their community, and the wildlife is next to none. Our guide was a 26 year old college educated Yasuni community leader and naturalist, who grew up hunting the jungle with his father, and now guides guests. The jungle is his jungle, and he is proud to share it with you. We saw 5 species of monkey, black caimans, many reptiles and insects and of course over 100 species of birds. You will enjoy a visit to Sani!

We booked Sani Lodge as the last part of our trip to Ecuador, and it was way beyond our expectations; honestly Sani Lodge was the best part of our trip!
Let’s start saying that in order to visit Sani you must be a nature lover, for us as bird watchers it was paradise. Second, you must understand you are visiting the Amazonia and you shouldn’t expect things to work out as they do back home. These people are making a huge effort into opening their community to us and sharing all the knowledge they have with you; that is priceless.
There was perfect timing in transportations, flights and tours and we made all bookings thru Sani Lodge; our guide Dani a member of the community was very informed, extremely gentle with a great attitude of service and always trying make your experience the most memorable. Don Guillermo “Guillo” was our second guide and the person in charge of our boat trips, it was such a pleasant surprise that “Guillo” was a bird expert; he knew everything regarding birds and that made our trip simply perfect. We had private tours all the time with two guides full or information. That was the best you could ask for; we got to see over 100 different bird species. Incredible.
The whole staff was incredibly helpful and kind, I think we were extremely lucky to have found Sani Lodge. Our room was clean, spacious, big bathroom; screens in every window and the door do there were no bugs inside the room.
It was perfectly understood that there was regulated electricity and water; we were in the middle of the jungle! And the reason why we had such a comfortable and safe trip is because Sani Lodge took such a good care of us. I thank everyone at their main office and at the Lodge for making our visit to the Amazonia so memorable. We hope we will be back with the whole family and we honestly recommend Sani Lodge if you ever in Ecuador.

Room Tip: I wouldn't camp there, their rooms are just beautiful and comfortable.

Great food, position, staff.......and best of all.......... all monies goes to the local Kichwa people.
Rooms were well above average considering its in the jungle on a stunning lake.
Many animals to be seen here.

Lots of waiting in-between activities to start, especially when there are new members joining the existing group. Didn't see much of wildlife but saw lots of insects e.g. leaf cutter ants, stick insects and butterflies etc. The tree-top tower gives a good view of the forest canopy. Our guide was knowledgeable and the crew were friendly. Our room/cabin was clean and supposed to have hot water but it didn't work during our stay. Electricity was restricted to certain timings (though there's electricity 24 h at the office) and there's a lights-out timing at night, so come prepared with your own torch lights or headlamps. Food was good.

It is very hard for me to try and describe how incredibe the Sani Lodge is. It's authenticity and people of the Sani Tribe are truly something one can only experience. This is not a lounging vacation though. If you want 5 star hotel and relaxation of sitting around this is not for you. But if you want to truly see the jungle and experience all that it has to offer, see more wildlife than you can imagine, and learn more in one day than you can remember then go to Sani Lodge. We went as a family of 5. Two kids ages 10 and 7, my husband and I and my Mom who is 69 almost 70. We loved every minute of our time there. Our boys would have stayed for 2 weeks, but we only had 4 nights and 5 days, which is really 3 1/2 days as the last day you leave the lodge at 7am, and it takes about 3 1/2 hours to get there once you land in Coca. My Mom stayed in the lodge, and we stayed in the tents which are very close to the lodge at the moment, but they are moving them to an hour away from the lodge, to be able to have a true camping experience. We saw 7 species of monkeys, a baby Fer de Lance, Tucans, and so much more you have to go there to experience it all for yourself. We were up most days at 5 and as we had young children to bed about 8:30 as they were exausted. Our Guide Javier was amazing and is the primary guide for families as his English is so good because he was educated in the USA. The best part for our boys was the blow gun practise and they just wanted to do it over and over. We all got our face painted and be sure to get the jungle stamp. If you are lucky enough to go to this incredible spot be sure to put your clothes in plastic bags, and take only 2 sets. One for hiking and one for later. It will all be wet and stinky, but it doesn't matter if you take the time to breath and look at where you are. It is like no where else on earth.

If you want an authentic jungle experience this is it.
First, I was very impressed with the common areas both in elagance and views. ESPECIALLY considering the location.
Second, we got our own two guides for just three of us and we got to choose our schedule.
Sure the guides arent textbook bookworms but they have lived in the area their entire life and therefore have the local and cultural knowledge of the area. If you have a questions they will answer them!
Third, THE FOOD AND COFFEE WERE AWESOME.

I loved our guides, I thought the were genuine and fun. During our trip we went up into the canopy, caymen watching, night hikes, parrot licks, hikes, pirhanna fishing, and took a visit to the community that runs it all.... all on our own time with our guides
