This has to be one of the most scenic, picturesque areas of New Zealand. From the varying colours of the water to the Hot Water beach nearby, everywhere you look is eye catching.

“Take the time to make this trek!”
Reviewed 15 May 2014

There are two trailheads for the walk from Hahei to Cathedral Cove. We chose to leave from the farthest and newest one at the public access/parking for Hahei Beach. The newest part of the trail travels uphill for a significant amount of time, but it's worth it because the forest seems so different than it is on the rest of the walk - denser, damper and less-traveled. We just took our time and stopped to gawk every time the trail opened up to the sea, and that seemed to make the incline easier to tackle (for us old people). The path goes through the main car park, which has a viewing deck and facilities, but the facilities are the basic outdoors (non-flushing) kind. The rest of the trail did not seem quite as steep, until the downward slope at Cathedral Cove, which ends in a staircase down to the beach. Be sure to duck around the waves and cross through the "cathedral" to wander the other side of the beach! There are a couple small trails leading down to other points of interest - most are steep down to the water, but they don't take too long. We saved these side trails for the hike back in order to save our energy to ensure we made it to Cathedral Cove, but after resting around Cathedral Cove for a bit, we had no trouble including these in our walk back. It was nice to end the experience going downhill to Hahei tho! My best advice is to make the journey - take your time, bring water and snacks, and the spectacular views will be a reward you'll always remember!

“Beautiful :)”

A gorgeous walk. Don't know if Tripadvisor is talking about walking along Hahei beach (GORGEOUS!) or walking from Hahei Beach to Cathaedral Cove (GORGEOUS!)

Doesn't matter.

Go here.

Hahei is my favourite beach on the peninsula, and wherever you walk you can't go wrong.
