We only booked to stay one night at this hotel on our way up north - it looked fine from the outside but inside it looked as though it was in a time warp - think early 70s. The room was clean, but basic and the shower was hot, that's the plus points. The breakfast was a basic sort of continental affair but what you'd expect for the price of $89 per night I guess. The bar was closed and we were told it had been for some time so we couldn't even get a drink, likewise the spa. This place must have been lovely in it's day but sadly it is now on a slow slide to oblivion. Thankfully we were only staying for one night and probably wouldn't stay there again unless we were desperate. A lot of TLC needed to bring this place into the 21st century.

Great for value. We had 14 people stay for 2 nights. Though the place is a bit old but could be expected for the rate we paid. Very Friendly and accommodating staff. Even accommodated our very late arrival. Would stay again but don't have high expectations.

This motel really is a shocker in every respect. Firstly, the special room rate advertised so prominently at its entrance is clearly used selectively when the motel is not very busy. We were denied it as the hotel only had 3 rooms left and we needed two of them. All the 'special' deals had gone, we were told. Really? We were desperate tho' and everywhere else was full so we had to resign ourselves to a rip off rate short of sleeping in the car, where with hindsight we would have been more comfortable, and richer. Sadly, all the negative reviews on this site are true and the management still fails to do anything about it. Staff were elusive and cold. We were told breakfast was not included in our rip off room rate yet we found a tourist board advertisement on the Northerner stating that continental breakfast was always included in their room rate. This time we dug our heels in and they reluctantly waived their breakfast fee. Breakfast would not have been worth paying for anyway.
This motel is far too dated, lacks any form of character and the big red carpeted corridors really are terrifying. Best really to pull it down and start again with a fresh management team who is not solely motivated by profit.

On the way to Cape Rengia with my wife and 2 other friends on 3rd November, we were tired to continue after a long drive from Auckland, so decided to rest for the night. Me and wife were pooped after a 12 hr flight, so had to rest, so took the 89 NZD option to sleep it off. The reception was big, the parking huge and long long red carpeted corridors long, the rooms pretty basic. Hot water was on, the insides looked pretty simple, but clean. The partitions were thin, we heard lots of noises from the room next door, if you put your bed touching the wall (you'd notice they had kept all beds away from the wall) the noise would be transmitted to the next room, not a comfortable thought. You can also hear people talking from the other side, me being a light sleeper, I listened to conversations from and other side and kept quiet :) My friends said not worth the money and pushed off to sleep in their tents a few KMS outside near the beach! The whole place had an air of getting run down, low turnover and not the best choice. Like others said, for a jump off point to the Cape the town is short of value for money options. Will not stay there for sure again.

Room Tip: Ask the reception not to give out the rooms around you if you want a quiet night.

The Northerner has a welcoming exterior that is not repeated inside by it décor and staff or management. A cheap price does not mean poor service and unclean rooms. The kitchen was closed for breakfast....with so few guests and a function the evening prior the dining room was not available. The hotel is not a good advertisement for the town.

A hotel that needs to be dragged out of the 60's kicking and screaming, but was quaint and fairly comfortable. Unfortunately they had a cockroach on their bread at breakfast time and then I found another one in my cup of tea! When advised the 'temporary managers' they were incredibly apologetic and even offered me a cooked breakfast at no charge. The thought was nice, but I declined. I had already had a bowl of cereal prior to finding the two roaches.
When I went to check out though, they charged me the full price for breakfast ..$12 for a bowl of cereal!! Won't be back I'm afraid!

This will haunt my dreams!
Red carpet and a creepy baby's cot with stickers out side our room. The room was old but clean. We were nervous because the girl who checked us in gave us the keys to a room and said 'Oh actually that room is occupied"... With our new keys we were a bit worried she may do the same with our key. Did not feel very safe. We checked out and stayed our second night at the Kauri Lodge which was much better - Super clean, free wifi and not as busy. Recommend Kauri Lodge over this place.

Room Tip: Stay at Kauri Lodge
