“Lovely setting, poor service”
Review of Carrington Estate Vineyard - CLOSED

We visited the Estate for lunch. The setting and views were wonderful, we enjoyed the food - however unfortunately the service was exceptionally poor.

We were shown to tables inside that had wet chairs, had to ask for the correct number of menus, chase down staff to clear items from the table, repeatedly ask for water (we ended up getting up to get it ourselves, along with another drink which no one would take an order for). There was food on the floor, we were not offered the opportunity to order desert, tea or coffee, and overall the wait staff showed little or no interest in providing even basic service. The staff seemed quite chaotic and not at all focussed on their customers - and it was not a busy day.

The food was great, and the wine was OK, which combined with the fantastic setting should create a wonderful day out. It's a shame that customer service let them down.

We knew the restaurant might be busy so called at 12 asking if we could book for 1 and were told they don't take bookings. I then asked how busy it was and was informed that there were plenty of tables and it should be fine. So we drive for 35 mins to get there and find the gates closed and were told the restaurant was full, and that for the last 3 days the gates had been closed after 12. Surely the person on the phone could have told us that! So we then rung and were told they could not out any estimate on how long it would be, and we would have to wait at the road. Talk about clueless when it comes to customer service. We had friends go last week and said the food was fine but the wait staff were ex faulty towers, however we decided with the lack of choice here it was worth a shot. What a waste of time.

The Karikari/Carrington Estate should be a tourist destination for Northland. It should be, but it isn't & it is very unlikely to become so unless they make some changes.

The views at KE are nothing short of breathtaking; even with pretty average wines throw in a passable menu & some semi-competent staff it would be a license to print money.

Unfortunately the praise one can heap on the vista are where the plaudits must end for this review.

If I went into a McDonalds & asked them to tell me what wines the Karikari Estate makes I would probably be asking a bit much; however if I were to ask that at the actual Karikari Estate, at a wine tasting that they expect people to pay for, staff unable to help past mumbling that everybody who knew about wine left last summer is just not good enough.

Neither is not coming back when a customer asks a question about your menu when trying to order lunch. They weren't rushed off their feet, we were one of two tables of two.

Nor is failing to offer a vegetarian option in this day & age (whilst our waitress' "...well you can just have some sides..." suggestion was doubtlessly well meant, I'm afraid that does not count).

So the wine tasting was a flop, lunch was likewise, let's just make the best of it; order something & drink in that million dollar view I hear you say. Well, no...

On our visit the temperamental Kiwi weather was living up to it's reputation (passing showers & brisk winds). True to form however the only wet weather tables prepared for the lunch service were in a darkened corner of the wine tasting room. Not only could you not see the view, you couldn't even see daylight!

Adding insult to injury there was a clear-walled marquee outside on the terrace, it just had just not been set up for lunch.

It was like they were actually trying to keep business to a minimum. What KE needs to realise is that when people go to a winery they are generally already prepared to part with generous sums of money for:

A) wine;
B) a nice spot of food; and
C) a pleasant experience.

Whereas Karikari's staff:

A) confess to not know anything about wine;
B) have put no care or attention into the menu; &
C) lack quite basic customer service skills & an understanding of what their customers want.

KE has a setting that would keep people there all day happily handing over their cash if they would just do the simple things right.

It is not rocket science; it is so basic that you can only conclude that Karikari's owners are completely apathetic to their investment to let it be managed this badly.

Train your staff, update your menu, take advantage of your USPs & hire a manager with a bit of passion for your industry. Please!

We originally went here for a coffee whilst we were touring the area but we stayed for lunch, and were glad we did. The scenery was stunning - lawns, vinyard, palm trees, distant white sand and blue sea. The pizza we had was very tasty and the wine was excellent. The price was also very reasonable. The staff were friendly and polite and happily explained, when I asked about the abandoned vines, that the wind is too strong for them on those slopes and so they are moving many of them around to another direction. We did think that the table set out on the lawn could have looked better - some looked a little delapidated - and were not inviting.

Would not recommend this place with strong gusty winds as we found out the day we went for lunch. There was a marquee to sit in but no tables available and the staff were very unobliging about us moving the tables we were at - there were10 of us. We did move them closer to the building to try and get some shelter only after a strong gust of wind came along and knocked a bottle over on the table, smashing a glass which then covered our daughter in water and shards of glass and all the waitress could do was laugh!!! Not a great start but the food we ordered was lovely although a little inconsistent. There were 4 burgers ordered at our table and they were all of varying sizes and not all had the same amount of filling. Overall the food was very tasty though and for those that had pizza they looked, smelled and tasted amazing.
