Lots of fish to see here. Tip check the water quality before you go, it can vary. Water is ok temp, you should be fine without a wetsuit is summer months, but outside of summer use a wetsuit.

Go early to avoid crowds and get a good spot. Visit the marine centre at top of hill with kids for educational visit. There doesn't seem to be as many blue mau mau as in recent years but still good for kids to spot fish easily. You might even see a ray. Be careful of the tides when going across to the island, get pretty strong. Let's hope this marine reserve is preserved for future generations to respect the local wildlife before NZ gets fished out.

took a diversion on the way north; well worth the expedition; excellent service, knowledgeable staff, it was a wee bit choppy, but only one of us was affected, fortunately not me, well worth the time and blew away a few cobwebs on the trip

Goat Island is just passed Leigh, and it is a beautiful place to go, and we have been there many times. The view from up on the hills is beautiful with the Pohutakawa treas on the left side cliff edge being a nesting site for seabirds. As the name suggests, the marine park is a reserve, which means look but don't touch. In summer it can be stupidly busy, and parking although plentiful, can still be a problem, so get there early. The water, fish, and marine life are spectacular, so bring snorkeling gear, you'll regret it if you don't. If you don't want to dive with the fish, you can spend time on the beach area to the left, or up on the grass areas. Toilets and changing facilities are excellent, and Leigh is close with food available.
