“Great Hotel for Family of 5 Ski Trip”
Reviewed 23 August 2011

Had a great time here, slept 5 in our room, several restaurants (good food), buffet breakfast. Drying facilities for wet ski gear, they'll store your baggage on the day you check out so you can ski the full day.

Kids loved it, one of those grand old hotels with high ceilings and fantastic views from the public lounge. Small but unique swimming pool -kids had to swim there it looked so cool.

Rooms were very warm, took us a while to figure out how to turn down the heating.

Car parking was the only negative --they do not have enough parks. We did not want to park on the road with all our ski gear etc . We invented an unofficial parking spot in their parking area, hotel staff did not complain thankfully.

Thoroughly recommended.

We were in Tongariro at the beginning of January and we booked at the bayview chateau because from internet it is not easy to find another place there and when you arrive you can see that at the Whakapapa Village there are very few hotel.
However the hotel is very good and romantic with a fantastic hall where you can sit down listening to the piano and looking at the wonderful Ngauruoe! At the sunset it is has something magic!
Here it seems to be in the 40s!

Our room was very clean but a little bit small with a little entrance and the bedroom where it was quite difficult to place our luggage.
However it was very clean as the bathroom that was quite big and with all you need.

The restaurant of the hotel was very expensive and the food wasn’t so good.

Nearby there is a wonderful small cafè, Fergusson Cafè, for breakfast: the best pancake with bacon I’ve ever eaten!

If you want to spend some romantic days in Tongariro probably this is the right place.

Nice place to stay. The lounge makes itall worth it when the weather closes in. The rooms and facilities are ok, but feel like they have just had the minimal overhaul when they were renovated. Having a room with a bath is well with the extra after a day on the snow. Service could be a little friendlier. Overall nice place to stay, close to whakapapa.

We were married here in 2005, and every time we stay it reminds us of a stunning, memorable weekend. The service is excellent, and cocktails in the sitting room in front of the fire is about as decadent as it gets. The food is always top notch as well, and the restaurant manages to feel private and intimate even when it is full (i marvel at how you can have a quiet whispered conversation even when it is busy, the acoustics are miraculous!). It is certainly not the cheapest accomodation in the area, but we have always been treated like royalty, and with the ambience of a secluded french chateau i think it is remarkable value!

Room Tip: ask for a drivers room if you want the royal experience but on a budget... they may be small, but th...

We saw the lights from a distance and knew that we are approaching the Bayview Chateau. It was past 5 pm and it was already dark. The bright lights of the Chateau were a welcome relief after driving for more than 2 hrs. We were so in need of a winter holiday that we subtracted an extra day in Rotorua just to be here at Mt Ruapehu. There are two ski fields here unfortunately accommodation at the Tongariro National Park is limited and we are so glad to stay in the Bayview Chateau in two standard rooms.

This hotel is rather old built in 1929. Despite its age, the hotel is beautiful both on the inside and outside. The lounge area is huge with a great view of the meadow and mountain. There are 2 lovely fireplace to hang around from the cold winter outside at the lounge and the library next to it. This is our first time sitting by a fireplace and what an amazing experience it was watching the snow falling outside. We are quite surprised by how big the logs are. A wonderful staff who helped with our luggage earlier, even told us to help ourselves putting logs to the fire. He chatted with us for a while and also offered to take our family photo.

Our connecting rooms use the old fashion keys. The heaters in the rooms and the electric blankets worked perfectly. This is a very quiet hotel and sleep comes naturally. There is a cafe and bistro across the road which we wanted to try but unfortunately did not because the snow fall almost became a blizzard and the roads turned to an ice skating ring.

This is a definitely once in a life time stay which will forever remain in our thoughts.

We were quite unfortunate when we stayed there as the weather was bad and you couldn't see mountains behind but this did mean we speant a lot of time in the hotel which was a pleasure.

We enjoyed afternoon tea, snooker, used the sauna and spa and had an excellent evening meal. The rooms were good with an excellent bathroom and I defintely hoep to stay there again some time.

The approach to the hotel is breathtaking. A magnificent building silhouetted against the slopes of the volcanic Mount Ruapehu. The reception area is just as promising, and then you walk past the restaurant and the billiard table to go to your room and.... disappointment.
Our room was small, dark and gloomy, and the furniture seemed to be of the same vintage as the building itself and offered no view. In this context the reception area started to look old-fashined and pretentious, and we noticed that most of the guests were of somewhat advanced age.
