“A stunning location...”
Reviewed 18 September 2013

We had the pleasure of staying as a family at the Chateau Tongariro Hotel, the location is simply stunning. Breathtaking views and Mt Ruapheu is there to be enjoyed. We stayed there during the last school holidays so the hotel was at full capacity. The dining options were great as they put on a buffet each night which was well priced and offered delicious food that both adults and kids enjoyed.

The hotel is a grand old dame, the reception area and lounge complete with painist was fabulous. The kids enjoyed the movies although scheduled movie times do seem to be a little lapse and on several occasions the projectionist needed to be found!

As for the rooms, the decor is somewhat dated but the beds are comfortable, there is the unique sound of the floor boards creaking above you but in such a grand old hotel one would expect that.

Breaksfast time was a little chaotic and perhaps required better management flow of people. Overall a great stay......

We came here for a luxury romantic get-away and it was well-worth it. Dinner at the Ruapehu Room was impeccable and staff were always friendly and good to deal with. Nothing was too much trouble. Can't really fault the experience. The hotel is old and feels very grand. Live piano playing on a grand piano in the lounge while looking at the mountain and enjoying the delicious high tea was a highlight! We had three amazing nights here which included a fabulous buffet breakfast each morning with everything under the sun on offer. Came home to a spotless room each day after day-tripping. Location is remote, quiet and exactly what we needed to get away from Auckland noise! The pool is a bit a creepy but they've done what they can with a very old building. The rooms are also very very hot! Even with heater off and window open. Still, with a few small faults, this place is a must-see. Bring a good attitude and a fat wallet! Really felt so relaxed and away from it all.

This iconic New Zealand Hotel is not trying to be something it isn't. This Hotel has history, elegance and charm which is being embraced entirely! The refurbished rooms are very well done - Classical in their decor and are very comfortable and clean. The bed was very comfortable, the fireplace was a great addition and the spa bath was the place to be after a hard day on the ski slopes!

We enjoyed a great meal in the Restaurant, the food was top class! Service was attentive, yet not over the top. I know in a location like this that quality, loyal staff are hard to find, however all team members did the Chateau proud with their willing and pleasant service.

Room service breakfast the following morning was of good quality and very well priced!

We explored the Hotel and had we had more time, we would have definitely enjoyed the lounge and probably a movie in the Hotel cinema.

Keep it up Chateau Tongariro! We will be back.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a suite - Spa bath and fireplace are a welcomed treat after a hard day on the slop...

Ever since I was a kid, I dreamed of staying here. Well last year I finally did it, and I could not believe how inexpensive it was. This time I bought my partner with me, and it was like being in a different era. Nestled into one of their great armchairs in the lounge, drinking a beer, reading a book, with live piano music - I felt like I was in the 1930's. However, the service and food were definitely 21st century.

Room Tip: Definitely worth getting a Premium Room in the Tongariro Wing.

We stayed here for 5 nights with the intention of snowboarding every day. Due to the volatile, unpredictable nature of Mt Ruapehu I boarded for 1 day only! If it wasn't for this hotel, I would have gone insane. Instead we did bush walks, enjoyed the facilities (spa etc, gym is only really for cardio), visited Ohakune as recommended by staff and also went to the war museum. On the other 2 days we just lounged around enjoying the grand room fireplaces, eating, playing snooker, drinking whiskey and enjoying the amazing views of Ngarahoe- at nights there was a great pianist entertaining in the same room. The buffet breakfast was incredible and we had dinner in the main room 1 night while we were there (expensive but definitely worth the experience). There are actually a few little cafes to dine in and a pub down the road which gives you dining options outside the chateau. We also snuck into the cinema room downstairs where they play mainly kids movies each night- very nice touch. Highly recommend this place.

Room Tip: The superior spa suite we had was fantastic and had plenty of space with a separate lounge. I would...

Thoroughly enjoyed our night stay in this hotel. The room was large & the bed was overly comfortable.
Breakfast was divine & we could not fault the staff in any way.
Highly recommended for either a short term or long term visit.

We decided to book for Sunday lunch at the Chateau and it was absolutely fantastic.

Arrived an hour early and enjoyed a couple of reasonably priced drinks whilst watching the mountains through the extremely large windows, completely stunning. The pianist was fantastic and really added to the whole experience, a far cry from the hustle & bustle of the ski fields up the mountain.

The Sunday lunch was exceptional, starters, main, dessert & cheese board all top quality and remarkably well priced at just $29 per head. The staff are friendly, warm & incredibly polite. The dining room is well presented and clean and offers amazing views.

Honestly well worth taking a look if you are in the area.
