It was a real treat to stay here. We booked online with the trip advisor special, and on arrival were upgraded to a mountain view room.

Although very cold outside, the whole interior was toasty warm. Staying here was like stepping back in time, in the huge main area where we enjoyed a drink before dinner there was a pianist playing beautiful music. This room was gorgeous with the huge chandlers and large bay windows.

The service was excellent and all the staff were very friendly. The room was large and very comfortable. The bed was also extremely comfortable.

The only two little negatives were no free wi fi, which we knew before we went, and the walls were not terribly sound proof, as we could hear our neighbours in the bath. This was not really a problem for us though.

I would love to return here, and will do so if I'm ever in the vicinity again.

This hotel is a well known landmark and stands out majestically with the mountain as a backdrop. It's a bit of a trek to get there but it's an imposing ediface on the landscape. It's old but well maintained. Food was amazing. But if you're not a skier, there's not much to do. Unless you ski, 1 nite there is plenty.

Room Tip: This hotel is a well known landmark and stands out majestically with the mountain as a backdrop. It...

We travelled from Auckland for a weekend away to celebrate a new job. The reception staff were friendly but it didn't stop the disappointment we felt as we went to our room :( Our room reminded us of staying at your grandparents. The furniture was miss matched, rooms dimly lit as minimal natural light, plastic toilet seat and over the bath shower which looked unappealing. For $220 a night we felt this was over priced.

Unfortunately I then had a bed bug/flea bite. We complained to reception who I don't recall apologising but resulted in 3 staff members examining my bite and THEN a photo was taken!!! This left me humiliated. We received a "complementary" upgrade which looked like any other standard hotel room but it was nice.

Did not spend long in the pool as in the "bowels" of the hotel.

We opted to drive back home sunday night as we didn't wish to spend another night there. Again no apology or refund......a lesson learned.

Room Tip: I would recommend visiting the Chateau purely to enjoy the lounge ambience and the high tea. If you...

At the Tongariro park. The best place to stay. Very well located. Nice staff and kindly. I asked for room with view and received one with the view to the parking place. But the room was good and well provided. The restaurant over priced. They have a cinema but only films for childrens till late nigth.

We had the pleasure of staying as a family at the Chateau Tongariro Hotel, the location is simply stunning. Breathtaking views and Mt Ruapheu is there to be enjoyed. We stayed there during the last school holidays so the hotel was at full capacity. The dining options were great as they put on a buffet each night which was well priced and offered delicious food that both adults and kids enjoyed.

The hotel is a grand old dame, the reception area and lounge complete with painist was fabulous. The kids enjoyed the movies although scheduled movie times do seem to be a little lapse and on several occasions the projectionist needed to be found!

As for the rooms, the decor is somewhat dated but the beds are comfortable, there is the unique sound of the floor boards creaking above you but in such a grand old hotel one would expect that.

Breaksfast time was a little chaotic and perhaps required better management flow of people. Overall a great stay......

We came here for a luxury romantic get-away and it was well-worth it. Dinner at the Ruapehu Room was impeccable and staff were always friendly and good to deal with. Nothing was too much trouble. Can't really fault the experience. The hotel is old and feels very grand. Live piano playing on a grand piano in the lounge while looking at the mountain and enjoying the delicious high tea was a highlight! We had three amazing nights here which included a fabulous buffet breakfast each morning with everything under the sun on offer. Came home to a spotless room each day after day-tripping. Location is remote, quiet and exactly what we needed to get away from Auckland noise! The pool is a bit a creepy but they've done what they can with a very old building. The rooms are also very very hot! Even with heater off and window open. Still, with a few small faults, this place is a must-see. Bring a good attitude and a fat wallet! Really felt so relaxed and away from it all.

This iconic New Zealand Hotel is not trying to be something it isn't. This Hotel has history, elegance and charm which is being embraced entirely! The refurbished rooms are very well done - Classical in their decor and are very comfortable and clean. The bed was very comfortable, the fireplace was a great addition and the spa bath was the place to be after a hard day on the ski slopes!

We enjoyed a great meal in the Restaurant, the food was top class! Service was attentive, yet not over the top. I know in a location like this that quality, loyal staff are hard to find, however all team members did the Chateau proud with their willing and pleasant service.

Room service breakfast the following morning was of good quality and very well priced!

We explored the Hotel and had we had more time, we would have definitely enjoyed the lounge and probably a movie in the Hotel cinema.

Keep it up Chateau Tongariro! We will be back.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a suite - Spa bath and fireplace are a welcomed treat after a hard day on the slop...
