“Service !! A rare find !!”
Reviewed 16 December 2013

After a very bad experience in Tekapo , We were very late arriving into Omarama and rang the gateway the woman was lovely and waited for us to arrive at 10.15pm . Great to have someone who actually cared , a rare thing theses days !! The room was older decor but as clean as a whistle. Although it is close to the road we never heard a thing , had a great sleep and breakfast .
We will definitely be back properly on a regular basis.

The hotel reminded me more of a motel. It's a good place to stop, do a bit of laundry, and continue on your journey. There isn't too much within walking distance. I remember a cafe and a grocery store. It's a quiet, sleepy town with simple hotel rooms.

My partner and I thought we'd go to the Omarama Hot Tubs during the long weekend and saw a great deal at Heritage Gateway Hotel for 1 night in a superior room, full breakfast for 2, $20 restaurant voucher and late check-out of 12pm.

When we arrived we were given the key to our room, we are smokers and asked where we could smoke and were moved to a room with a balcony - this was really nice we really appreciated that. The room was nice, basic but clean tidy and well presented. Yeah the TV is small but you don't go away to watch TV so that didn't bother us.

We found the restaurant was a little unorganized, only 1 bar tender for a big group (as there must have been a tour group too), a little under staffed and unprepared... i.e we had to take knife and fork from another table, weren't offered extra drinks etc, couldn't find serviette's, tomato sauce etc. One staff member stood out - we didn't catch her name she seemed as though she was a manager/supervisor or something though she looked after us really well.
My partner ordered from the bar menu (nachos which he was so looking forward to from last time and they were delicious) and I chose the buffet. The buffet was nice, good variety but again unprepared with soup as we were lost as to where soup spoons were, dinner rolls etc but someone eventually handed those out.
The buffet breakfast the next morning was lovely, we both really enjoyed that. There was a great selection.

We had housekeeping knock on our door a few times the next morning, I don't think they realized we had a late check out, my partner did tell them and they said they wish they had been informed. I think they were just quite understaffed and busy being a long weekend.

Please note: you can hear people's bathroom doors very early in the morning which we found a little annoying.

Overall we had a great time though, nothing to moan about just a couple of things to improve on :)

Room Tip: We thought the superior room was perfect for a couple.

Room was not what we call superior, small room with double bed and small tv in mono only, could get stereo on any channel despite playing with menu selection.
fibbed at by reception on two occasions, meal was garlic and herb bread that had no garlic in it, tough pork and an inedible pretend crackling that was like well aged rock. wanted berry topping on sundae, got that on chocolate ice cream.--Hello!!!!
bus load of tourists arrived at 10.20 pm for 1 hour ran amok while were trying to sleep.
then loud annoying noise noise, from utility room next door kept us awake from 1am thru to 0245 am. then we packed up and drove home at 3AM back to Timaru

Saving grace is we have been offered a refund on accomadation, 50% on the meal would be welcome but we are never using them again so a moot point.

Room Tip: Get a room with a big double bed a single bed as well, any else is not a superior room. DO NOT GET...

We had a nice quiet night here recently. The room was on the small side but clean and warm. The tv was quite small. The restaurant had a good wide ranging menu and the service was excellent.
My one big complaint was the complicated and expensive wifi setup. When will NZ hotels get over it and supply decent wifi?

Omerama is a beautiful town and the hotel was a little old but well finished and perfectly adequate for a one night stay. There were huge double glass doors with a very pleasant view to the mountains. The dinner was served by way of an extensive buffet which was good, well pprepared, well served and lots of choice. we enjoyed it.

Arrived on a Friday afternoon. Greeted by a friendly receptionist. We were offered a price for a bed only, or for bed and breakfast. We chose bed and breakfast. We went upstairs to our room and were pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness and size of the room. There was a ranch slider to allow you to take in the view and sunshine, although we were there in the middle of winter.

Excellent size bathroom with room to swing the cat, if you brought it with you.

The TV was a tad small for the size of the room, is my only complaint.

On Saturday morning we walked over to the restaurant for the full breakfast, which was very well cooked and well presented.

Their apple juice was soooo good.

Room Tip: If you cant manage stairs then request a downstairs room
