“One of the worst places I have ever stayed in”
Reviewed 21 March 2010

We booked this accommodation from the AA Guide in which McGuires says they have deluxe accommodation in a wilderness setting. There was nothing deluxe about the room we had - mould all around the sealant in the shower, very tired and dated. The grounds were full of weeds and the restaurant and bar were not open in the evening. In fact the lounge was locked from about 8pm so we couldn't even go and sit in a comfortable seat and watch TV away from our room where the TV was almost at ceiling height and was almost impossible to watch and the only seats in the room were very old kitchen chairs. I would say this is is on a par with real budget accommodation or a backpackers.
Never stay here - in fact there is no reason to stop in Haast at all. A very grim place.

The one review for this hotel says if you have to stay in Haast stay here - we would say - just don't stay in Haast there is nothing here - the area is completely windswept and bleak and there are no good places to eat!
We booked in advance of our stay and wished we had not - on arrival at the lodge they were advertising rooms for half the price we had paid. There was only one other room occupied so we would have got a better deal paying on arrival.
Bates' Motel sprang to mind as we drove into the car park - the building is remote! The receptionist explained that the on site restaurant was shut (this was the reason we had chosen to stay here!) but that she could arrange a lift to the sister hotel (Heartland World Heritage Hotel) up the road when we wanted dinner.
The room was very basic and dated and the bathroom was huge and cold.
We left the hotel to explore Haast - to see if there were other options for dinner. There was a bar with so many pairs of antlers and heads mounted on the walls that we couldn't count them - the menu looked ok but the atmosphere wasn't very welcoming. The shop was overpriced, but as Haast is very remote this is to be expected. Having checked out the alternatives we decided The Heartland hotel was the best choice for dinner.
On returning to our room we tried to call reception numerous times to arrange our lift. In the end I visited the reception to find the receptionist surfing the internet and maybe this means the phone doesn't work!
We were picked up by a really friendly guy who owns The Heartland Hotel - he drove us to dinner and took us back afterwards. Dinner was a quick affair as the restaurant was fairly basic - with dead flies on the window sill next to our table.
We turned in for the night early as we had an early start the next morning. It felt remote and slightly creepy!
In conclusion, I would avoid Haast, drive onto Fox and stay there.

We had such trouble finding a nice place to stay in Haast. Everyone who travels down the west coast needs a place to lay their heads on their way through, and there doesn't seem to be a single place to stay in Haast that received good reviews on trip advisor! All the trip advisor reviews warn against hotels with fleas or bad service etc etc. We decided to stay at this one, which, at the time of writing, didn't have a review. I guess we decided - "They all sound bad, why don't we have a shot in the dark?"
Well, we couldn't have been more surprised. The staff upgraded us (without asking) to an enormous room (because there was hardly another soul staying there!) and the room was clean, with lovely views. The verandahs were shared, which I don't particularly like, but it was too cold to go outside anyway. The rooms were warm and brand-spanking new and the shower was hot. And no fleas!!!! :)
