Ok we read the reviews all good & bad & decided to take a chance.

I have to say we were pleasantly surprised. Its a bit pricey & yes this is an old heritage building, in the middle of know where & it isn't 4 star quality but we weren't looking for that. It is a good 3 star hotel & they don't profess to be anything else.

There was a big bus tour in & it was very busy, but the staff still found the time to make us feel welcome.

The room was clean & tidy not big, but big enough, we had dinner in the wild goat Cafe at the hotel & it was very nice. The venison pie I had was the best meal I had on our trip to date, you have to try it if you are here.

Don't go here with high expectations, expecting the comforts of city hotels because you are not in the city, you are basically in the outback of NZ. We enjoyed our 2 night stay at this hotel, it has all you need, don't get me started on our stay in Wanaka, thats another review all together which isn't good..

For what its worth you should try this hotel I think you will like it & the Glacier is out of this world.

Room Tip: front facing rooms, up stairs are the best

We had a very disappointing stay at this hotel. Our room was extremely cramped, there were no bedside lights (nor much room for them), the bathroom was dirty & the cups on the hospitality tray had lipstick on the rims. We did complain & received a bottle of wine & some cookies, plus a very wonky bedside light, but no change of room - unlike another complaining guest achieved. On our first night we had dinner in the hotel at the ‘Mountains Goat Café’ & the food was extremely mediocre & unappetising. We were on a 4 week holiday in New Zealand & this was the most expensive & definitely worst accommodation we had in our entire stay. We would not recommend staying here.

Don't let the stunning scenery fool you. We felt the Heartland Hotel Group website was confusing and we turned up at their 4 star hotel in Franz Joseph which looks amazing. We were told that we were at the wrong hotel and drove another half an hour up route 6 to get to the Heartland Hotel, Fox Glacier. Its supposedly a 3 star hotel which it may have been 30 years ago. We were given a room in one of the satellite buildings and as soon we opened the door we could tell the room was both damp and dusty. The bed was so soft it was like sleeping on a sponge and i awoke with a back ache. Take a tent and sleep somewhere else.

Me and my hubby stayed in Heartland Hotel Fox Glacier during late winter this year August 2011, the atmosphere was great, quite, intimate and warm hospitality. The front desk staffs were friendly and always greeted us with smile, and also the staffs in restaurant where we took our breakfast every morning. We even got the rear side room which faced to the back of the hotel where we could have a magnificent vista of Mt Cook & Mt Tasman through our window, we could just lay back on the bed and admire those stunning overview, it was fabulous! Its location is very convenient, it's in the center of township where can get to any other local attractions very easily such as the "must visit" glacier in Fox Glacier, Lake matheson where u can have a cup of coffee at the award winning Matheson Cafe with an outstanding vista of stunning Mt Cook and Mt Tasman, and also many great foods restaurants, souvenir shops & flight scenic helicopter center are just a foot steps away from hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms facing back of the hotel have a stunning overview of Mt Cook and Mt Tasman through the window.

We stayed here during our world cup rugby travels for 2 nights & loved it. well worth the money. You just have to visit the glacier while you are here , it's unreal. The food was great, & the staff exceptional & the beer cold, met the new manager , very friendly chap running a great team of friendly only to willing to help staff. room clean & tidy with all we needed, it's not the Hilton , but hey, it's not Sydney either :). Very good well run west coast of New Zealand hotel at a good price. Everyone in this small town we met made us feel welcome. Our friends also enjoyed there stay, even though we didn't win the rugby.

i stayed here bout 3 weeks ago and is was great different but great. as i came in to fox i couldnt miss the hotel big white building on the left as you come into town heading south looks old well turns out over 100 years old. i was greated with a warm smile and showen to my room up stairs the room was good the bed was comfy and room was warm and even i couldnt use all the hot water. dinner time i went to the cafe down stairs looked at the menu and it looked great however being in a fish and chip mood but only fish on the menu was monk fish and veg on menu i asked the waiter if they had another fish and few minutes lated he came back offering me a different type off fish :) it was great then after dinner which was great i went to the bar for a drink got talked into playing pool and meet some of the locals who there family members built this hotel in the 1800's breakfast was also as good as dinner the night before. over all for the price to stay here the top class service and the homely feel of the hotel i would recommend this hotel to every one :)
