We thought we had time for just one hike to a glacier so we chose Fox. We were disappointed. There was construction earth movers working on the river. We couldn't get close at all to the glacier.

The walk was short, so that was good because we decided to check out Franz Josef.

Check out the information board before you start the hike. There is a side stream you need to cross and may need to get your shoes wet if there is a lot of water on that day itself. It was a fun hike and towards the end and nearing the glacier, it is a very steep hike up. It is worth the hike up. Hike up slowly.

We enjoyed the walk to the glacier which was a one hour round trip to the car park. The last 10 minutes of the walk was fairly steep but the viewing point was close to the glacier, in fact much closer than the equivalent viewing point at the Franz Josef glacier

We did not take a guided tour to the face of the glacier but chose to walk on our own as far as allowed. On the day we were there we actually were able to walk far enough to look down on the front part of the glacier. It was great to get this close. There were two guided tours (barely visible) out actually on the ice standing beside this one rock in the middle of the glacier. I noticed that the people were dwarfed by this rock that the glacier had moved along. It gave an idea of just how long the glacier is and how it has shaped the environment.A very beautiful valley. Do persevere to the end- lots of water and rest breaks and snacks. We are a moderately fit 70 years old and managed well.If you only have time to see one glacier this is the one.

From the car park, which is undergoing major renovations, the trail starts off flat enough. You cross several streams with stepping stones before the trail starts up a steep incline. Before you start up the incline there is a place to view the face of the glacier. We, being in our sixty's, took our time going up the incline but it was worth it. You see up the glacier for quite a way. We had a nice day for our walk and the views along the way, including many waterfalls, were great.
