“Blue mushrooms? Is that New Zeland for Snipe?”
Reviewed 13 May 2014

I loved this place. First, it looks like a new hotel / new room. Everything is in good shape, no dings on the furniture / marks on the paint. It really felt like we were some of the first people in to use the room.
The room is very large. There was a lot of extra space for just two people. There is a small kitchenette with everything you needed to cook (if you want to).
There is a laundry facility on site, which I used. It worked fine.
Parking is right in front of every room. So access is very easy.
The best part about this place was the couple managing the hotel. They did not own it but were managing it for the season. They had not decided if they would come back next season but I hope they do. The couple was very helpful with recommendations of were to eat and what to see. They suggested the Minihaha Track after 7:00 p.m. to see the glow worms. It was promised to be “magical.” And it was, glow worms glowing around you in a dense forest. I would never have known to do that if weren’t for the manager’s recommendation.
They also suggested looking for blue mushrooms alongside Lake Matheson. I thought they were having some fun and sending me on a snipe hunt, but blue mushrooms exist. They are hard to spot, but once you see them you will be amazed. I was told they only grow in April there so look for them then.
I would stay here again.

Room Tip: Rooms 6 & 8 are the largest rooms / best rooms according to the maid. We stayed in room 8 and i...

We received a very warm welcome at the Westhaven and enjoyed our stay. A walk to all the cafés and restaurants. We awoke to snow on the mountains and with only a 5k drive down to Lake Mattheson we ate breakfast to one of the most spectacular views in the country. The motel was modern and had good facilities, good heating. Unfortunately not too much soundproofing between rooms so take earplugs.

Room Tip: See if you can get a room that doesn't adjoin another, or if travelling with a group, the adjoin...

I echo the many positives in other reviews about the Westhaven. Comfortable, spacious clean rooms, spotlessly clean; and accommodating hosts. Location could hardly be bettered for walking to cafes etc. But we do agree: the showers are rather weak.

Our room (19) was set up for physically disabled people.

So, a really good place to stay.

The shower is rubbish...that's the only bad thing about this place! The hosts are the kind you would hope to meet, we stayed here whilst the storm hit the West Coast. Roads were closed, power was down, complete nightmare!! However we were put at ease with the updates and general knowledge of the weather from the hosts who were only too happy to offer tea and coffee. Beds are comfy, its in an ideal location for the Fox Glacier tour centre, plenty of cafes and places to eat around.

Overall a friendly place. Good location in town. Nice facility. Room smelled like cigarette smoke. I do see they charge a fine to those who smoke in the rooms, but do they apply this extra charge to deodourizing the room. Would still recommend and return.

So glad I stayed here while in Fox Glacier. The room itself was great - spacious with a handy kitchenette, and there are laundry facilities on the grounds as well (free to wash, $2 to dry). What made my stay especially wonderful were the hosts, who were super kind and friendly. I was offered a ride to (and back from) Lake Matheson, which is about 6km away from the town, when the hostess found out I was traveling alone without a car!

They also offer special discounted prices for helicopter rides to the glacier, which was perfect since the walk-up hikes were cancelled while I was there... and the ride up ended up being one of the highlights of my trip.

We stayed here with family from the U.K., the rooms are extremely large and spacious, modern & clean.
The lady at check in, possibly the owner was wanted to help, extremely friendly and had a local knowledge that was true and unbiased
Would Defiantly recommend and stay here again!
