A fantastic motel with awesome views. Rooms are not huge but very well set out, modern and very comfortable. The highlight was the view from our room which had a little outdoor table and chairs outside where we sat and enjoyed the the mountains. The cloud covered this the following morning however this really is a very nice place. The shared laundry facilities where fantastic with only a small change fee for use and powder available from reception. The host was very welcoming. This is located a short walk out from town

Room tip: Don't bother paying extra for spa bath as this is really just a basic bath with jets and we didn't bother using it - probably not worth extra cost.

Fox Glacier has what it says on the tin, a glacier, some interesting walks and lake Matheson to explore but accommodation is limited so Paul Carberry of New Zealand in Depth did it again with the Sunset Motel, a couple of minutes outside of town but great position, good views very good facilities for a motel room, a launderette should you need to catch up on the chores, very comfy beds and a managing couple who are full of advice on where to go &what to do when the cloud comes down and your helicopter flight keeps on getting cancelled! I'd happily of stayed for longer than our two nights but so much of New Zealand still to see and so little time!!

Despite the low cloud cover, we were enjoying the lovely garden view from our well appointed room, taking note of the Tui and small honeyeaters, and then the cloud lifted and we saw the mountains. What an amazing sight! Our lounge windows looked straight at the mountains and we were enthralled. What a terrific little motel to stay at - very comfortable with good facilities. We found the hosts very helpful with a nice dry sense of humour and they gave us some great tips to enhance our touring of the area. It was a charming place to stay and we would recommend it without reservation.

This delightful Motel is located a few minutes out of the thriving metropolis of the Fox Glacier town and is in a very peaceful location, set back a little from the town it offers great views out to Mount Cook and Mount Tasman – assuming the cloud cover has lifted but really does give great views in the late afternoon and at sunset. The owners are a delight and nothing is too much trouble – they make the stay very enjoyable and can book tours plus give you information about the local sires and restaurants. A side trip to Lake Matheson is a must and hopefully you can book in at the on site restaurant there – the menu looked awesome but sadly they were booked out during our stay – we can recommend however their hot chocolate, best enjoyed after a walk around the picturesque lake. The Motel room is very modern and comfortable; each room has a little verandah to enjoy the mountain views. The bed is very comfortable and the bathroom new, clean and of good size. A fine sleep can be obtained. The bathroom is new and of good size with nice toiletries. A cooked breakfast is not available but a 10-minute walk or 2-minute drive to the township provides a number of good venues for breakfast in a relaxed rural environment. The Fox Glacier is about 10 minutes drive away then one has options of various walks around and to parts of the Glacier. The Franz Josef Glacier and township is about a 15-minute drive away and can be visited.

Room tip: Try to have views overlooking the mountain peaks. Great late afternoon.

Good location (if you are driving); about a half mile from the main road in town, towards Lake Matheson. Tourist helicopter landing area is nearby; but noise was not a problem at all. In fact, if you like aircraft, you'll enjoy watching the helicopters come in for landing from the glacier valley. The receptionists (owners I think) were friendly and helpful. We stayed in the Spa Studio; and really enjoyed it; far end unit, nicely furnished kitchenette, comfortable bed, a small patio with table and chairs fronting a big lawn, and a great view of the mountains.
The hot water is slow and it took about 20 minutes to fill our spa tub; but the wait is worth it. Enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and soak in the view before you soak yourself; remember, you're on vacation. We didn't use it; but the motel has self service laundry available too. If we ever come back to New Zealand, we'll stay here again.
Tour tip: if you're able to, splurge and take the helicopter tour that lands on the glacier. You get up close and personal to the mountains; and walking on a glacier is a neat experience.

Room tip: Room tip; get the Spa Studio at the far end of the motel. Extra privacy, the best mountain views (even from inside the room), and the jacuzzi is nice.
