Our road trip of South Island eventually brought us to Fox Glacier and we couldn't have chosen better than the Sunset Motel the view from the room was terrific. We woke to the sun illuminating the peaks against a blue sky. The room was of a medium size but well appointed, though a little short on drawer space, with a good kitchenette and large shower/toilet room. The help from reception was great and through which we got a good deal on a Milford Sound cruise. Everything in the room/motel was in excellent condition and very clean. All in all we could not have asked for more.

Room tip: It looked as if all the rooms had similar views

A fantastic motel with awesome views. Rooms are not huge but very well set out, modern and very comfortable. The highlight was the view from our room which had a little outdoor table and chairs outside where we sat and enjoyed the the mountains. The cloud covered this the following morning however this really is a very nice place. The shared laundry facilities where fantastic with only a small change fee for use and powder available from reception. The host was very welcoming. This is located a short walk out from town

Room tip: Don't bother paying extra for spa bath as this is really just a basic bath with jets and we didn't bother using it - probably not worth extra cost.

Fox Glacier has what it says on the tin, a glacier, some interesting walks and lake Matheson to explore but accommodation is limited so Paul Carberry of New Zealand in Depth did it again with the Sunset Motel, a couple of minutes outside of town but great position, good views very good facilities for a motel room, a launderette should you need to catch up on the chores, very comfy beds and a managing couple who are full of advice on where to go &what to do when the cloud comes down and your helicopter flight keeps on getting cancelled! I'd happily of stayed for longer than our two nights but so much of New Zealand still to see and so little time!!

Despite the low cloud cover, we were enjoying the lovely garden view from our well appointed room, taking note of the Tui and small honeyeaters, and then the cloud lifted and we saw the mountains. What an amazing sight! Our lounge windows looked straight at the mountains and we were enthralled. What a terrific little motel to stay at - very comfortable with good facilities. We found the hosts very helpful with a nice dry sense of humour and they gave us some great tips to enhance our touring of the area. It was a charming place to stay and we would recommend it without reservation.
