“Didn't Want to Leave!”
Reviewed 15 January 2013

We were very lucky to have recently stayed four nights at Misty Peaks in Fox Glacier. It was the perfect place to call home for a few days. Everything about Misty Peaks was lovely - the location was great - off the main street of town, but close enough to everything. And we only had to walk about 50 feet to catch our helicopter ride to Mt. Cook (which we also recommend, but if you do it, be sure to book through Misty Peaks!). The rooms were very nice, with a lot of personal touches that made it feel like home, only better. The kitchen was a perfect gathering place with picture windows out to the mountains and an island to gather and share stories over wine and cheese (and get in Dave's way while he was cooking up something wonderful). And it was great to have Dave cook you dinner - definitely the best restaurant in town. I had the fish (perfectly cooked), my husband had the fillet and loved it and other's at the table had the lamb - and, to be honest, I didn't see lamb look that good anywhere else in New Zealand, and we saw (and ate) a lot of lamb!

Dave was helpful and honest with his advice. You can't go wrong - he understands his guests and gives great tips. He's easy going and fun, and if you spend enough time chatting, in no time at all he feels like an old friend. We were just sorry that his wife was visiting their grandkids in Christchurch while we were there and we didn't get to meet her!

My favorite memories from our trip were sitting around on the couch with wine (and more wine) and sharing stories - and Dave being patient with my questions about New Zealand that I'm sure he's heard a million times before!

If you come through Fox (and you should) spend a few days at the Misty Peaks - and don't just sleep there - have dinner, chat and get to know the place. It will only make you love New Zealand that much more. Thanks Dave! Our only regret was that the bridge north got fixed from the wash out and we didn't get stuck there for an extra day!

Stayed one night in this purpose built B&B in Fox Glacier. Very comfortable room and wonderful service. Dave, the owner, was great, very friendly and not to mention a very good cook. Book the dinner and you get to watch him cook it while enjoying a glass of NZ wine. Misty Peaks is appropriately named with its superb location and views of the surrounding mountains. Fox Glacier is a calmer and quieter alternative to the hectic Franz Joseph community.

We arrived after a long drive over Haast pass and after being shown our spacious beautiful room we were invited to join Dave, Lea and the other guests for wine and nibbles. The garden is lovely and it was really nice to be able to open the patio doors in our room and smell the jasmine. The bed was very comfortable and we slept well as it was so quiet. Dave turned out a very good cooked breakfast to complement the cereals and preserved fruits. We would have liked to have stayed at least another night.

We recently stayed in the Honeymoon suite at Misty Peaks. The room itself was spacious, and included a lounge area, walk in robe and large bathroom with spa bath. The bedroom area had a set of doors which backed into a verandah, with views of the hills beyond. There were a couple of small issues. Firstly, potential guests should be aware that the honeymoon suite is closely located to a helipad, where scenic flights are taken to fox glacier. This provided some disruption until night fall. Secondly, we appeared to have checked in just as the gardener was getting started with some intensive activity. For two hours in the mid afternoon, as we attempted to relax after a long drive, a man on an extremely loud ride on mower rode continuously past on the grass outside our room window/ door entrance - uncomfortable with the man seeing directly into our suite, we were compelled to shut the curtains for the best part of the afternoon. I appreciate that the garden work had to occur - but this might have been better scheduled after checkout and before checkin in order to minimise disruption to guests. Breakfast is fine, and includes the usual preserves, bacon and eggs and standard brewed coffee. In order to increase the vaue proposition for the room price, it;s suggested that some effort could be made to incorporate local produce into the breakfast menu / some creativity with cooked breakfasts and a lift in the standard of coffee served. The main "congregation" area for breakfasts, complimentary drink/nibbles at 6 pm and dinner is in the kitchen/dining area of the owners' section of the house.
Sitting at the owner's dining table, however, there is very much a sense that you are in another person's private home, with personal decorations - christmas teddy bears, trees and other family decorations etc around the place. We did not stay for dinner. Internet is free and of a reasonable speed. All in all, an ok stay, but nothing exceptional for the price. We stayed in a number of other B&Bs in the South Island which to us, appeared to represent far better value for money.

We booked on hotels.ca and paid 325 per night. At that rate it is way overpriced. The room was nice, the hosts were great but the websites way oversell the remoteness and tranquility of this place. The dinner was unexceptional with shared sides and boiled potatoes for top dollar. The breaky was bacon and eggs and some preserves. We met some great people but are so glad we only stayed one night. Advice - book directly on their site and go elsewhere for dinner.

I stayed at the Misty Peaks for 2 nights and it was just great! The owners are welcoming and yet not pushy. The room I was staying was clean and tastefully furnished. My it has glass doors facing the greens and mountains and I did not close the curtain just to make sure I can enjoy every minute the views of the beautiful mountains here! I did not try the dinner menu here but after eating out in the town, I guess it may be a try as there are not too much to choose from in the town. Recommended!!!

Dave and Lea run an up-market B&B in a quiet location close to the Fox Glacier town. The rooms can't be faulted with very comfortable beds and great views of the mountains (I understand that all the rooms except one are identical). The cooked breakfast consisted of eggs and bacon supported by delicious fruits preserved in syrup and homemade preserves with the homemade bread. A nice touch is the complimetary glass of wine and nibbles each evening, whether you dine with them or not. The evening meal is highly recommended, particularly as there are few other decent places close by. The menu is brief but all dishes are good with the fillet steak and nectarine and apple pie oustanding.
One reservation is the that Misty Peaks feels like a small hotel rather than a B&B, Although the web site suggests there is a shared lounge for guests use, we were given the impression that this was principally for Dave and Lea as they watched their televsion programmes and used it as a working study. Consequently we felt obliged to relax in our bedroom as other guests seemed also to do.
Finally we cannot conclude this review without noting that the nightly charge is higher than we feel is warrented, recognising that all accommodation is more expensive on the West Coast. We stayed in other equally good B&B's at $100 less than Misty Peaks.
