Stayed here for a couple of nights in Jan, 2014. The hotel is ~1 km away from the city centre and is a single storied hotel. The hotel seemed deserted on the first day when we checked in but we could see some people around on the second day. It was a bit gloomy.
Plus points - decent facilities, spacious and clean rooms and quite a warm host.
My suggestion would be to either stay at the hearland hotel in Fox or stay in Franz, which is another glacier town ~20 kms away from Fox but is slightly bigger in terms of hotel options/restaurants than Fox. But Fox Glacier is bigger than the Franz Joseph Glacier - so take your pick.

Hi. Just a couple of points I would like to make. Firstly I note that a few of our recent reviews have obviously been influenced by the weather. I must agree that overcast rainy conditions can be a bit gloomy but you must accept that this is the West Coast, we are surrounded by rain forest and if it wasn't for the rain the place would not be what it is. We have a web cam which updates every 10 minutes of every day so we do not try to mislead about our weather However, when its fine and the Alps are clear, as at the moment, this property is a magical place to be.
Secondly, with regard to our location, all our advertising including our web site clearly indicates that we are 1.5 kms from the town centre, down Cook Flat Road far enough to get the magnificent views that we enjoy. These views cannot be seen in the township. We also emphasise that this is a very quiet rural location. We have no immediate neighbours but are surrounded by farmland sprinkled with native trees. So I agree with you that if hustle and bustle and bright lights and noise is your scene, High Peaks is not for you. But if peace and quiet and a sound nights sleep is your thing then we are definitely worth a look.

Cheers
Alan Chant

The High Peaks motel is perfectly adequate. The room is large and clean. No kitchen facilities but there is a restaurant. They say there is free wifi but you just can't get onto it. Good points: it does have a shaver point which most places we stayed at haven't, and the cows lowing in the adjacent fields at meal time were highly amusing.

However, we wanted to see Fox Glacier. That's why we stayed in the town. Unfortunately the weather turned on us and it poured down. There's nothing to do in this town except go up onto the Glaciers or go to the pub. If your trip is cancelled for any reason (eg the weather) you can stay in your room or go to the pub.

We recently stayed one night at the High Peaks Hotel and thoroughly enjoyed it. Our room was large, well-appointed and spotless. The bathroom was the largest and provided the most manueverability of any on our trip through NZ. The restaurant was excellent - I second the comments of a previous reviewer who enjoyed the lamb shanks - they were delicious. Marlene and Alan went out of their way to ensure we had a comfortable stay, and we greatly appreciate it. We would highly recommend the High Peaks Hotel to anyone visiting the Fox Glacier area.

This is a rather depressing place, devoid of any kind of charm and barely functional. The rooms are a decent size but poorly decorated. The television was so old it would not have operated in Australia. The electric jug was glacial and the refrigerator was so small that it would not accommodate a bottle of wine. The bathroom was motel standard (not sure whey they style this property as a hotel). The only real merits are that it is clean (which I expect so don't rate as a positive) and is fairly close to the Lake Matheson cafe, where you can get a decent meal and enjoy the lakeside walk.

I am a complete loss to understand what we did to deserve such a negative review. I accept that people have different tastes when it comes to décor and that we can not please everyone but as per other reviews most are very happy with High Peaks. The TV is actually not that old, has a 32 inch screen and would work just fine in Australia. As all other guests figure out , if you take out the removable shelf from the fridge you can fit in several bottles of wine. With regard to your hotel-motel comments, in this country a motel has full kitchen facilities where as a hotel has rooms, usually accessed from an internal corridor, with tea and coffee facilities only but has a bar and restaurant where guests dine, as is the case here. Marlene and myself try very hard to be helpful and cheerful with all our guests so to read your comments is very disappointing. If you were not happy here you would have been most welcome to check out and go and spread your good cheer elsewhere.

A little off the main road but a nice place to stay. Very clean and well maintained. A very comfortable bed. I wish I had heard about the restaurant on site before going into town to eat. I have heard that it is very good. It turns into a bar at night which was good. Our friendly barmaid in the evening was our server for breakfast. A small but very friendly and helpful staff.

High peaks turned out to be one of the best in the motel category of places we'd stayed in the entire S island trip. The rooms were decent, very clean and the views excellent. The restaurant was closed so we had to go to town to pick up supplies ( none of the ones in town frankly appealed).
The internet is very unreliable in spite of efforts by the reception lady, I couldn't get a decent signal and finally abandoned my efforts.
