“Bit disappointed”
Reviewed 11 July 2014 via mobile

Due to bad weather conditions, our quick fox guided trip was cancelled. The company obviously couldn't do anything about this, but it is a long drive from Queenstown so I recommend you check in on the morning before you leave to ensure tours are operating. Also check the roads as we were stopped for about 25 minutes at Diana Falls due to a rock fall. Fox guiding offered a hike to the terminal face instead, and whilst this was fine we did wonder why we had paid when we could have walked the track for free. Our guide did fill us in with details about the recession and progress of the glacier etc. Fox guiding did provide wet weather gear and it was great to have this as it was very wet and having done other walks in the rain we knew it can take a few days to dry out coats and shoes etc. the public track goes to the top of a hill and apparently you could look down on the glacier from there. Our guide didn't take us up to that part as the company felt it was too unsafe owing to the possibility of rock falls (there were a lot of other people walking on that part of the track). So we were disappointed we couldn't do this part. We did get to go off track and got close to the river in front of the terminal face. We felt that $225 for a family of 5 was not great value for this hike.

“Heli-hike”
Reviewed 7 July 2014

We did the heli-hike and it was the highlight of our trip. We had a brilliant time exploring the glacier for a couple of hours and walking through ice tunnels, which were really fascinating! It was really good fun and I felt very safe under the guidance of our guide! Thankfully, we had great weather when we went, as the trip is cancelled in certain weather conditions- I'd recommend staying in Fox for a couple of days to allow for a change of date of the trip.

After our heli-hike, the guides at the bottom told us that the Haast Pass was closed and that the earliest that it would be open would be midday the following day, and we needed to be at our next stop by the following morning. The guides were really great, explaining the alternative route we needed to take, highlighting it on a map for us and telling us where we needed to fill up with petrol and food to make it safely across!

This was a great trip and I would highly recommend it.

We were humbled to read that your heli-hike was the highlight of your trip, it's deeply satisfying to know that you built and took away some incredible memories with us.

Also thank you for highlighting our belief that a visitor's experience encompasses much more than our walks. In your case our team member going the extra mile by giving you some fantastic information which made your journey away from our region a lot easier.

Lastly we are so pleased that you made the point about allowing more time in Fox Glacier when wanting to do a weather dependent Flying Fox Heli Hike. This is something we are always trying to reinforce too.

We hope to see you back with us again one day.

Kind Regards

“Ice explorer!”
Reviewed 7 July 2014

We booked a couple of days extra at Frans Jozef to make sure we were able to do the Ice Explorer and skydive (because these both depend on the weather). Luckily we got to do the ice explorer tour the day the skydive got cancelled.

The helicopter flight was short but definitely scenic and awesome. We were the only group out at the glacier and there were just 8 of us! Our guide (John) was great, he told a lot of nice facts about the glacier, was funny and he made sure we got a great hike. The other ice explorer tours got cancelled that day so we sort of had our private glacier that day, which was ace.

Making your way through narrow icy bits and a landscape full of ice, with lovely views. We loved every bit of it. Would definitely recommend this.

“Heli ice climb”
Reviewed 5 July 2014

Absolutely fantastic! Dave was an awesome guide, friendly and knowledgable. It was quite challenging, and you need a fair amount of upper body strength to get the ice axes in. Definitely worth the money, once in a lifetime experience.

Thank you for your review, we'll be sure to pass along your comments to Dave, Heli Ice Climbing Guide Extraordinaire. Your comments will certainly "make his day".

Small numbers sure allows the Heli Ice Climb trip to be a tailor made vehicle to test your own strength and limitations. It makes that hot shower at the end of the day ever more the sweeter don't you think. That tired but contented feeling of achievement.

We're glad you had a fantastic time and if you have any photos we'd love to see them via our face-book page/email/google+ if you would like to share.

“Quick Fox Glacier Climb”
Reviewed 27 June 2014

Boots and "crampons" are provided and any other gear like The guides took us on a short bus ride to the Fox Glacier Valley where they gave us some information about the area. To get to the glacier we will need to track 12km by foot, which actually was quite an easy walk. Enroute we also need to cross a river by a manual pulley-operated raft. As we took the quick climb, we only had about what felt like 30 mins to stay on the ice and take some photos. Would probably be more worth it for the full day tour. But all in all, it was a great experience!
