From reading the reviews before we left for our trip, we had high expectations for this place. We expected the cottages to be nearer the glacier. When we found that we were on the opposite side of town and the glacier was seen from quite a distance, we were a bit disappointed. The owners had left a note on the door saying where our room was located. They did come out when we were looking a bit lost.
The room was just o.k. the room was clean but the colors were so dark, everything looked a bit drab. The queen bed is in the main room. The second room had two twin beds (can be combined for a larger bed). The beds were very uncomfortable.
On the positive note, we stayed for two nights and when we woke up the second morning, we had no power. As we were packing up to leave, the owner came out with some hot water for some coffee/tea.

A very pleasant place to stay as others state. Roomy enough and comfortably appointed. The weather was very cold and we kept the room warm but the electric heating method must be expensive! We spent two nights here.

Due to unfortunate circumstances the hosts were absent which may have been why the rooms were not serviced daily. The usual bathroom supplies were also short - no soaps. Our documented booking from wotif included contintental breakfasts but they were not supplied which meant some unexpected shopping and driving. We managed to telephone the hosts who stated that breakfast was not done at this time of year? Nothing turned up the next day. Internet access was not available either.

The accomodation is great but we believe that hosts should keep their advertising up to date, as well as have a standby manager to cover absences.

First of all the cottages are lovely, they are located on a miniature horse farm and the cottages have an uninterrupted view of the glacier. Wow. The cottages are brand new and modern well appointed and clean. The beds were great and it was nice to listen to the river flowing as I lay in bed. The room was warm and comfortable.
We had an unfortunate incident when we lost the car keys of the hire car down the storm water drain in the town. It was puring rain and we were in despair as we realised we were marooned in Franz Josef with 3 small children in the pouring rain and no transport. The people of the town were fantastic, the ladies at the Glacier Centre let us use their phone several times, the glacier hike guide gave us a lift to the cottages, the staff at the Landing cafe printed a sign for the car and let us use the internet. The local policeman was understanding about the car being left there. All was good but even better when Tim from the cottages learned of our dilemna - he offered us the use of their car and on top of that drove my husband all over the place looking for the keys from various stormwater outlets. It took a few hours but he wouldn't give up! He got down into the stormwater and spotted the keys halfway under the road then went to his workshop and made a metal claw to grab them. He recovered the keys, what a guy! We contacted the car hire company and found out we would have been up for over $1500 in fees to replace the keys - even though we had taken out the top level insurance cover.
I so want to go back to Franz Josef and see these fine people again.

These cottages are very well kept and are well appointed, the landlady is very pleasant and accomodating. The views outside are breathtaking, you would not get the same views by staying in the village. I suggest you stay here and enjoy the views, and if you were to stay more than one night you would be extremely relaxed.

Franz Josef Glacier is a small place and accommodation options can be limiting. We found this cottage on another website after finding many hotels fully booked.

What a fantastic find, the owners are very friendly and helpful. The rooms are spotless and everything is like new - fully equipped kitchen. Perfect for families or couples and especially if you're staying few nights or more. One good thing about staying here rather than right in the village (slightly lower elevation) is the view. The property has an unobstructed view of the mountains/glacier and it is a magnificent view to wake up to.

We were worried that this place was hard to find as it was described as being a few km outside the village, but there is only one highway that runs through the village so you won't have problems even if you arrive in the dead of night like we did.

As it is 2.5km outside the village it is best to stay here only if you have a car. Don't worry you're not missing much by not staying in the village, there isn't a lot there to begin with and you'll avoid all the weekend drunk drivers - this is the kind of village where you'll run into a lot of young local people drunk and wandering around "dude, where's my car"

  • Liked — Great value, good location with best views, friendly owner
  • Disliked — 2.5km from village so you need a car
