“Awful service by Lara”
Reviewed 7 May 2014

We visited Alice May only to be rudely confronted by the most horrible waitress ever! She has gelled up/oily short blond hair and we deduce that her name was Lara from some of the suspicious reviews posted below.

Not only did she find words to insult the "noise" (we dispute this) we were making, she also told us to leave the restaurant when we were very respectfully (in quiet, un-raised voices) trying to educate her on good service - something she is so clearly lacking when she spoke to us as though we were children.

Under NO CIRCUMSTANCE should a waitress ever regard her customers in this manner (unless of cos they are of immediate threat to other customers or service staff.) The very FIRST WARNING or in her case, confrontation, should be polite.

TO THE MANAGEMENT OF ALICE MAY: Lara (if the name is right) needs an education in good service, pronto.

“Stunned. Not by the food but by vulgar service.”
Reviewed 6 May 2014

As a group we visited this restaurant for dinner after an awesome Skydive but our celebratory moods were soon quelled by the rudest female waitstaff in existence. She has short blond hair, regarded us with indignity and aversion for "noise-making" which certainly didn't go above reasonable levels. Sure, we get it, Kiwis like peace and quiet and we try to respect that. But in a restaurant that serves beer, and seemed more casual (people walked in wearing t-shirts and trek shoes, there was no dress code and music was being played fairly loudly), we were certainly caught unaware that loudness (think: excitable young ladies who just completed skydiving) was unacceptable.

We can easily accept if the woman had come up to us and told us POLITELY to keep our voices down as we may be disturbing the other customers but God forbid, no! She stomped over and told us that the noise we were making was "awful!" That was the single, rudest thing anyone has ever said to any of us, and even more horrifying that it shld come frm a SERVICE PERSONNEL to PAYING customers!

Part of any dining experience is often social and includes the company of friends. I think it is not unreasonable to expect that sometimes, people do get carried away and talk above the normal tone of voice. Why, if keeping a restaurant quiet is so important, surely Alice May shld spare no expenses on having sound proofed rooms? Perhaps the cost can be deducted from this rude female waitstaff's salary since she's such a strong proponent for silence.

A real disappointment. I have been to New Zealand twice and had such a good impression of the people until i met this woman.

I'm hard-pressed to even give a rating for "bar scene" and "atmosphere" for this place on Tripadvisor because there is only one honest answer, zero.

Visit this place only if you want your dining experience to be quiet as a temple.

“Wonderful meal!”

This is a cozy restaurant with great service. I had the winter special ..pot roast with soup and dessert for 30 NZ. It was delicious. My husband had the venison which was outstanding. It was prepared perfectly and mixd with spinach and potatoes. Don't miss eating here if you are in the area.

“Lovely food in a unique historical setting”
Reviewed 5 May 2014

We couldn't figure out how anyone could give this restaurant less than a very good review and are glad we decided to go despite some of the lesser reviews. The food was excellent (ribs & venison were had) and the service very good despite them being quite busy. Suggest you don't come too late as they do fill up. I think we went around 5:30pm and within an hour, they were packed out, mid-week.

“Good food and a warm welcome”
Reviewed 4 May 2014

We ate here shortly after power was restored to Franz Josef following the storms caused by Cyclone Ita. As a result it was extremely busy, hence we were pleased to be offered a table despite our not having booked.
The service was friendly and courteous despite the number of customers - and our food was delicious, well presented and without delays.
Recommend a visit if you are in town.
