Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: Lonely Planet voted the West Coast Wildlife Centre in the heart of Franz Josef as one of the 12 must see things to visit in New Zealand. This is the largest kiwi hatching facility in the South Island and the "must see" indoor all weather attraction in Franz Josef – home to the official hatching facility for the world's 2 rarest kiwis – the Rowi and Haast Tokoeka. See live kiwi during the day inside our nocturnal house, discover the interactive glacier attraction and West Coast storytelling areas or go behind the scenes on the “Backstage Pass Tour” and see live kiwi chicks and meet the friendly kiwi ranger staff. Numbers are very limited on the 30 minute Backstage Pass Tour so booking are highly recommended to avoid disappointment. The best shopping in Franz Josef can be found here inside the all weather facility -and enjoy free Wi-Fi in the cafe to keep connected to family and friends. Enjoy a coffee or a snack in the cafe – or pick up a pack lunch for your day of adventure. Open from 8.30am daily – 365 days. Set aside 1-2 hours for your visit. All tickets purchased are valid for 24 hours so you can come back and see the kiwi as many times as you like within that period !.

“Interesting but!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 July 2014 via mobile

It's all about helping Kiwis, but for $60 we really expected much more than 2 Kiwis, which were in such dark conditions, it was almost impossible to see them, and a few short videos. Save the Kiwis, sure, but this is on the edge of being so expensive no one is going to pay!

“Best Kiwi Viewing Ever”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 July 2014

We have been to a lot of kiwi viewing sites and this one, with the unusually rare Rowi kiwis, gave the best and closest experience, with top notch staff. The glacier and alpine displays are very cool and informative, I highly recommend visiting this attraction.

“Up close to kiwis”

A fantastic way to learn about the rare Rowi kiwi, with incredibly close viewings. Also hands on interactives about the glaciers. Well worth the visit.

“Expensive for what it is!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 May 2014

We thought that this would be much bigger than it was. Essentially it is just one dark room with 2 kiwis in. There are no other animals to see! Once you leave that room, there is some information / film about kiwis and also the glaciers, but we only really came for the kiwis!
Later in our trip we visited the Willowbank Wildlife Reserve in Christchurch, which was much bigger, had more animals (including more kiwis) and cost a similar price. I know which one I would return to!
