We, (Dad Mum and four kids aged 9 - 13) booked a 6 bed room . It was clean and comfortable. The whole Yha had a run down feel to it but it was still a good place to stay. Kids had fun playing pool all night . The kitchen facilities were ok but it just felt like the whole pace needed a paint and polish. Great friendly staff.

The location is good but the entire yha is looking a bit shabby and the hostel could probably do with a makeover. The kitchen facilities are also a little bit cramped. However, as it is a purpose built yha all the usual things like the huge dining rooms and sitting areas are well kept and make for a fun stay. Noise is not really a problem

Better than expected but this is exactly how most hostels are so it might not be for some.

You have a shared kitchen/lounge with the whole hostel, which seems rather big and even at off peak times it's still busy. Then you have to share showers/toilets and there aren't very many. We were in room 110, so on the second floor, and we were directly opposite the toilets (didn't know what to make of that) but in both male/female toilets you have 1 toilet and 1 shower and 2 sinks, that's it. Then in the middle of both toilet you have another shower. So unless there are more somewhere else, that I missed, you only have 3 showers for a whole floor! Finally as someone else mentioned you do get the hint of damp when you walk the corridors and it looks like they have just stuck chipboard over the walls to cover it up.

However as bad as the above is (I'll let you decide) I was impressed with a lot of things. Upon arrival we met a cat which gives the place a homely feel. Then we were greeted at reception and although we didn't have the correct paperwork we checked in a storm. Also at the time of booking we opted for a 6 bed dorm (hoping we'd have the whole dorm for ourselves (group of 5)) but we were wrong. We were told that someone was already in that room however even without asking he soon began to find us an alternative, it's like he read our mind. Eventually he came up with a family room (sleeps 4) and offered to put in a camp bed to make it up to 5 and asked if it was OK. Great service!

As for the room well 5 of us had enough room even in a room for 4. Beds were comfortable, room looked spotless and we had clean/fresh looking (not old 50s fashion) sheets. There was nothing to complain about.

stayed in double room, bed confy room clean but slight smell of damp.
hostel itself was also clean but is probably on YHAs list of hostels that could do with a lick of paint as others have said its a bit worn. Is in a fab location and the kitchen appeard to be a good size for the number of guests and it was well equipped,
would stay again

Recently stayed here for 2 nights when I was in town for 2 nights so that I could do the half day glacier hike.
The hostel was clean and the staff were fantastic. I stayed in a single room (room 23). It was fine. A bit noisy, but not when it was time to sleep. Very clean and sufficient for my needs.
The Intercity bus drops off and picks up right from here, so that makes it easy.
Definitely worth staying at.
