“Wonderful warm welcome”
Reviewed 9 March 2014

What a wonderful friendly place. We were greeted by Kaz and shown to our lovely suite room, with all facilities. The lounge is wonderful with a huge picture window from which you can see the glacier. Breakfast was really good too
If you want to do the helicopter ride over the glacier, book it in advance with Kaz who will get you a discount
We were driving, but if you are on a coach tour it is a bit far out of town to walk

Booked in by our tour company and on arrival everything we had read was confirmed. Nice welcome and room more than adequate. Spacious common areas and grounds. Our problem was as we came in my coach and with no real taxi service or buses it was a good 15/20 minutes walk into Franz Josef.bearable in the dry but walking back in the rain ( this is a rain forest after all. ) we got very wet and unable to get back in the evening for a meal as rain still very heavy. If you have your own transport then ideal , as owner confirmed bookings at a good level proved. If not then maybe booking in nearer to the centre would be advised.

We were immediately welcomed to Westwood by Kaz, the owner, who takes pride in her place and the way she treats her guests. At check in, she made some quick suggestions for food and places to sit, relax and view the mountains. We had a brief tour of the Lodge and our room. There is great thought given to each person's preferences, personalities, and itinerary/excursions. From a delightful breakfast with wonderful conversations with Marie who is well- traveled and quite interesting and also the other guests to an afternoon of excursions or lounging about the property, chatting with the owner, and then an evening of light drinks poured for us while we learned more about Kaz, Benson ( who we loved to play with and pet). There is a genuineness and sincerity that Kaz and Marie bring to your stay because they want to make sure everything is to your liking. They are both so sweet and have great dispositions and are lovely to spend time with. They seemed to have a good sense of staying to chat long enough to make us feel welcomed and then they'd be off to do something else, allowing us time alone. They really knew how to read us. The accommodations are spectacular. Large, really large bathrooms with what I jokingly called a 4 person shower, but it was remarkable and then there was that deep bath tub that just called my name after hiking on the glacier. I highly recommend both! Robes are there for the using and it's a great way to relax. When we first arrived, there were fruits, biscuits, and a selection of milk for us as a courtesy. That was delightful. TV was perfect but it we wanted, there was a library of movies available to us. The bed was comfy and we slept so well there. It was quiet, roomy, peaceful and very very clean. Our room had it's own private patio surrounded by naturalized plants and wood pigeons and other neat birds. The halls and rooms were kept very comfy, temperature-wise. Enjoy the game room, outdoor checkers and gardens and books galore. We felt as though we were staying with family and frankly we couldn't have more pleased with our stay at Westwood Lodge. It was worth every penny/dollar spent. Thank you, Kaz. Thank you Marie and a pooch smooch to Benson who was a delight. Our stay was from 8 Jan to 10 Jan. On a side note, I had inadvertently left my Northface jacket behind in the wardrobe. Kaz was kind enough to mail it to my home since we were 6 hours away by the time I realized it. I gave her my credit card number so she could mail it out. THANKS It arrived in perfect condition.

Room Tip: Perfect hostesses, perfect stay.

On a recent driving trip around the South Island of New Zealand, The Westwood Lodge was one of our favorite stays. We had the opportunity to chat with both Kaz and Maria - Kaz over a drink in the lovely living room and Maria at breakfast. They are both interesting and delightful. The lodge itself feels simultaneously luxurious and comfortable. We appreciated the attention to detail including the delivery of fruit and cookies to our room, soft throw blankets on the couch, an umbrella at the door (although we didn't need it) & artisan soap products in the bathroom. The views are lovely and the room was spacious and accommodating with a sweet patio through sliding glass doors. Breakfast was exceptional with a variety of options including home-made yogurt.
What a bonus to see Benson, the very well behaved Labra-doodle on the property!

Very nice rooms and grounds. The room was huge and felt like a woodsy cabin. The décor is sparse, which made it feel a little cold (i.e. not really homey). The common area has a lovely fireplace with a view of the Glacier, but not much seating, so if other couples beat you to the couches you can't sit by the fire.

The service was excellent. When we checked in the manager, Kaz, inquired about our activities and itinerary after leaving Franz Josef – thank goodness she did! We had booked an afternoon Heli Hike and had planned to drive to Queenstown afterwards. Turns out the road closes at the Haast Pass (on the way to Queenstown) at 6:00 PM sharp and we would have been stranded in Haast that night (and missed our activity the next day on Queenstown). Kaz helped us to re-book our Heli Hike for the morning with a different company so our trip could continue to Queenstown as planned. Five Star Service - thank you Kaz!

One note – breakfast tables are communal so you may end up sitting with strangers. This didn’t bother my wife who loves to chat, but I thought it was a bit odd.

Overall a great place to stay, though the price was a bit steep.

We had a looong driving day and finally arrived at Franz Josef, Westwood Lodge, late afternoon. Caz took great care of us (three couples) and gave us expert advice on what to do for glacier sightings/tours and made dinner reservations for us too. The rooms are spacious, welcome cookies and apples were appreciated, and the breakfast in the great room was delicious. In a small town like this, it was a happy surprise anI highly recommend!

Room Tip: I loved being able to open the back patio doors for air and a great morning view. Rooms 3,4, and 5

We just completed a trip of over 4 weeks around Australia and New Zealand staying in many hotels. This was perhaps our favourite. Although its location, being about a 1km from the town centre, is perhaps not the best for some reasons, it does offer a spectacular view up the valley towards the glacier.
The room was large with ample space for our luggage. It was in excellent decorative order and things appeared to be new. The manager was extremely helpful and friendly making lots of useful suggestions of things to do/see.
There was car parking very close to the room and the grounds of the hotel were very well kept.
One thing I didn't love was breakfast. The choice was not the best (perhaps not surprising for a smallish hotel), but the main thing was that we had to share a 6 person table with another couple we didn't know on one morning. This is because there were only 3 large tables and none for just a couple. Apart from this, I think it was very hard to fault.
