Glenfern Villas is isolated from the village of Franz Josef, about five minutes north along the highway. As long as you have a car, it's not a problem.

The villas are very spacious and clean, with a living room separate from the sleeping quarters. Our villa had a nice view of the glacier (on the clear days). The staff is knowledgeable about restaurants and activities. They even have a small collection of DVDs for rent, and the rooms have DVD players.

There are really no amenities here since it's meant more for self-caterers. But there is a bocce court and a children's play-set. The kitchens are adequate and they even supply you with fresh milk for coffee.

I think it's a great value, especially for families.

We just stayed here for one night and it was ideal. Our villa was smart, spacious and well equiped with a fabulous shower. We had a view of a glacier from our deck. It is a short drive (about 3 minutes) to the restaurants in Franz Josef but there is plenty of choice once there. The hosts were more than helpful in arraging a courier service once we had realised we had left some belongings at our previous accommodation...

We booked our stay here about 6 months in advance and asked for a room with a view. Prior to our arrival, I told my husband that based on their web site description and photos, I thought this was going to be my favorite place of lodging on our entire trip. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. Unlike the other reviewer, the fact that we booked well in advance didn't seem to matter as we were given a unit that faced the road, with a very ugly tan metal fence right outside of our sliding door and deck, and a very minimal view. That part of the accomodation was not attractive at all and was quite a shock to us when we walked into our room. At a rate of $195 a night, one would expect more, particularly considering there were vacancies, we had booked far in advance, and requested a view. Upon going back to the office to inquire about a change of rooms, I was rudely recieved by the owners themselves and was told that "someone has to have the room near the road". Overall, the room was large (we did not have the 2 story unit as described by others), clean and modern. The room is not serviced daily with the exception of clean towels being dropped off in your room in a plastic bag. We didn't really mind that because we do like privacy, but again, for the price one would think they might come in and make your bed. It is accurate that you must have a car to get to "town" , which was not a problem for us since we were on a driving vacation and had our own car.

Overall, I would agree with the other reviewer....is there something glaringly wrong with this place? No. But it isn't on my list of favorites. Considering we stayed at several different places and types of lodging during our month long journey in NZ, this place just left us feeling rather cold and empty. I can't really put my finger on it, as the room was large, fairly new and clean. It was more the poor view of a fence and the cool attitude of the owners that left us feeling like the place is not A list material. It is unfortunate, because it has the potential to be a much nicer place. If we were to go back to Franz, we might consider staying here again as the choices for lodging are fairly limited. But it would be with the express consideration that we had a better unit and we would avoid contact with the owners if possible. I would hate to see their reaction if we needed anything.

My initial impression, as we arrived on a rather dull day, was not that great. The buildings looked a bit bland and functional from the outside, but my mood ws much improved once we'd checked in (very friendly and helpful - not the actual owners I believe) and seen our accommodation. After a series of hotel rooms and restaurant meals it was great to have our own little apartment - nice bedroom, adequate kitchen, lounge/dining area in an open plan arrangement. Parking right next to the door and a pleasant decking area. We took full advantage of the facilities and cooked our own meals on both nights.

The people running reception gave us good advice and offered to book excursions for us.

Convenient for the town of Franz Josef, about a five minute drive - not really viable for walking into town.

This is a truly lovely place to stay. The accomodation is like a mini house!!

On the first floor you get a large open plan sitting, dinning room, kitchen area, a large bath room with modern fittings and a walk in shower and a double bedroom. Up stairs there is a twin bedroom.

The sitting area has glass doors leading out onto decking. The sofas are very comfortable. The kitchen area is very well equiped, there is a small selection of drinks and nibbles which can be purchased, along with the complimentry tea, coffee etc.

The beds were equiped with electric blankets.

The accomodation was spotlessly clean and the owners super helpful. We needed a late checkout which the owners agreed to without hesitation. They were very knowlegable about the area and provided us with a map showing the best places to eat with children.

Wireless access is well priced. There is a small childrens play area and a laundry open 24 hours a day.

We would love to go back to stay, this time for a longer period of time.
