We had a nice large room with fridge and microwave, king size bed and couch. Very comfortable with helpful staff. Convenient location and lovely views.

The Alpine Glacier Motor Lodge is conveniently located and offers spacious and clean accomodation. The little kitchen that comes with the room is well equipped and practical.
The Lodge also offers washer and dryer in its compound. Front desk staff was very friendly and easy going. Franz Josef is a very small town and all restaurants and supermarket are within walking distance from the Alpine Lodge.

All was fine with the room (No 23) except for the horrible smell. The owner at first denied there was a smell but then conveniently produced an ioniser to "cleanse" the air in the room and admitted that even though he could not smell it a previous guest had described the room as smelling like a sheep truck. He offered a refund (which we did not take) and then arrived with a breakfast tray. Good attitude and facilities but smell in the room was overpowering (possibly a sewerage leak) and we eventually bought an air freshener at the supermarket just to get though the night. The guest in No 24 told us his room also smelled.

We were delighted with this fine motel. We were greeted by a very friendly reception staff member. The room was large and cozy and the shower was perfect. It's a small town but still appreciated its central location. Staff was very helpful with local sights.

Because we decided to stay two nights instead of one, we were upgraded to one of the large rooms in the Alpine Glacier Motel. Indeed, the room was large. We were very glad we got the upgrade because other rooms we could see looked pretty small by comparison. Since we were on the end upstairs (unit number 19) we had windows on three sides which made the room seem even more spacious. Through the small kitchen window we had a lovely view of the mountains. The other, larger windows, looked out into nearby back yards and businesses.

The room was clean, with a king-sized bed plus a couch. The bed was comfortable and yielded a good night's sleep. It was very quite. The linens were fresh and clean. All the furniture and fixtures in the room looked quite new and functioned well.

The room had a small kitchen area. It included a hot plate with 2 burners, microwave oven, refrigerator and a small assortment of eating and cooking utensils. You could not expect to do heavy-duty cooking here.

The bathroom was clean, with a shower and no tub. The fixtures looked new and clean. Missing, from the room, however, was any horizontal surface on which to put stuff; there was no shelf or counter at all in the bathroom. The shower was a curtain that encircled a drain in the floor, a style I've seen in Europe. Hot water took a very long time to arrive in the bathroom or kitchen.

Internet was available for a fee. The staff we met were all friendly and helpful. The parking is very tight; the designated spaces are ridiculously small. Since the town of Franz Josef is very small the motel was close to all the businesses, including some restaurants that gave us good meals. One aspect of the town that was annoying was that after about 8 in the morning there was almost a constant buzz of helicopters taking off or landing at the nearby heliport for glacier sightseeing.

Overall I would recommend the place for folks not expecting anything fancy.

Room Tip: Go for the larger one.

We planned a two-week NZ vacation using TripAdvisor recommendations. A New Zealander that I know told me that motels were 'the way to go' in rural NZ, and that they were spacious, comfortable, well-maintained, inexpensive, and convenient.

Granted we were there in the first week of January, and the motel was almost completely full, and we were therefore in the rooms that don't often get used (Rooms 21-25, I believe) . . . . But. .

When we got to our rooms, they were REALLY musty smelling, and the wi-fi, which is very expensive, didn't work in our room, causing us (and other guests) to 'camp' on the area outside of the office to get a signal. One's car must be parallel parked in front of the window providing light to the unit (with about a foot of room to spare), and the overall quality of the room and fixtures felt very poor, like a Motel 6 type experience in the US. There was also a pretty big bug that I looked exactly like the roaches we would see in our Cambridge, MA apartment, that was there to greet us when we returned from going to the hot springs.

In Franz Josef, the street with 58 on Cron motel looked a lot nicer, with newer accommodations. Also, the road out of town going North (there is only 1 road) also looked like it had nicer places than Franz Josef proper.

But, the two proprietors of the hotel did really try to make us happy (even bringing lavender in hot water to try to take some of the smell out of the unit), which we really appreciated. This was just the case of a physical plant that was really much less nice than we were accustomed to in Queenstown, Auckland, the Cormomandel peninsula, or other places that we stayed in New Zealand.

Truth be told, while we enjoyed seeing the glacier, and the drive is quite spectacular, left to do it again, we would have stayed in Queenstown an extra day or two (with a day trip north to Mt. Aspiring N.P.), and then flown from Queenstown to Nelson (to visit Abel Tasman N.P.) and skipped driving the Coast entirely.

Room Tip: Absolutely avoid rooms 21-25 in the back.
