“Couldn't fault a thing!”
Reviewed 24 February 2014

We arrived at Rainforest retreat for two night stay and now I wish we had stayed longer! Our tree lodge was at first glance a little shack but how wrong we were! Once we opened the sliding louvre door and opened our lodge we were very happy to be in a spacious and extremely well appointed room. The bed was huge and very comfortable and the bathroom was exceptionally clean and spacious with a lovely selection of proper sized complimentary soaps, shower gels and shampoos. We had our own private deck and sitting out to eat supper with a glass of wine listening to the birdsong was very romantic! The staff were very helpful and on hand to answer any questions and queries. On our second night we had dinner in Monsoon which is located onsite. The food was as excellent as it was inexpensive and the staff were so pleasant and friendly,
This resort caters extremely well for couples, families, campers, backpackers and the young and old! and we would highly recommend a stay here. Even the mosquitos were friendly and didn't bite us during our stay!

Room Tip: Tree lodges are very well appointed and spacious

Dear AS42
Thank you so much for the great review. I agree the Tree Lodges are great rooms. I am so pleased you loved your room and our restaurant so much and hope you can make it back to us one day.
I hope the rest of your NZ journey was as equally enjoyable.

I'm in my early 30s and felt old at this hotel. It was a contiki tour bus stop and thus filled with young travelers who like to party. In our case, there was a party next door to our room until 4am. The walls are thin and it was LOUD. We didn't bother trying to use the hot tub because there were always so many kids in it. The restaurant's beer tap froze and they seemed to often be out of several entrees. The staff seemed to be bigger partiers than the guests. The laundry on-site was convenient, and the location was convenient. The rooms were clean and large with plenty of hot water. Shampoo, conditioner, etc is not provided and the hair dryer was weak. Overall, honestly, not a bad place, but wouldn't recommend it unless you're looking to party late at night.

Room Tip: if you can't find the plates and cups, look behind the bar stools... there are cabinets there.

The Rainforest Retreat was one of the best locations we stayed at in New Zealand. The property has very diverse facilities from simple motel rooms to private cottages and open air whirlpools (very nice). A lot of young people stay at the Rainforest Retreat (party). Yet our cottage was nice and quiet at night.
The restaurant located on the property servers decent food and some of the best and cheapest cocktails in all of New Zealand.

Room Tip: Gecko Cottages offer romantic athmosphere and privacy. (make sure you like your sleeping partner, as...

This is a great holiday park to stay at in Franz Joseph. It's a 2 minute walk to all the restaurants on the main street. The kitchen was big and the bathrooms were well kept. After a long day of driving from Queenstown we got there about 30 minutes before the jacuzzi was supposed to close. When we checked in they offered to keep it open a little longer so we could use it after our long drive. :)

Before visiting Franz Josef Glacier (the town by the glacier) we were recommended to stay at Rainforest Retreat - which we are happy for now! It is a fantastic place with both rooms and parking for camper vans spread around the jungle like rainforest, very cosy and mysterious feeling. We traveled as a company of seven persons and had rented the "Kamahi Tree House" (situated freestanding 4 minutes walk from reception, spa, bar and restaurant) which was very nice, among the best standards of normal priced lodges in NZ in my experience.

Room Tip: Kamahi Tree House

Great location, in fact, all hotels in Franz Joseph do have this. THis place has an eco feel with all the trees and green surroundings. Felt very nice. The room was ok, spacious and comfortable. This is not a 5 star hotel, do not expect that. It met what we needed, stayed two nights, all good. My only complaint is the shower setup... a bit acrobatic if you do not want to wet everything in the bathroom. I would stay there again.

Room Tip: Don't hesitate to spend just a bit more for a larger room.

The web site makes all the rooms look very nice. We booked the "Superior Ensuite Queen". Sounds good right? It was by far one of the smallest rooms we have EVER stayed in anywhere in the world! The queen bed literally filled the entire room. No windows, only way to get any ventilation would be to open the sliding door to the parking lot. We don't spend more time in any room other than to sleep - but this was so small only my wife could open her bag.
The location was good and we only planned to be there one night - so we managed.

I think one of the other reviewers stayed in a room like this and described it as their 'prison cell'.

Room Tip: Look elsewhere or maybe book one of the very expensive rooms.

Hi Dick
Thank you for choosing to stay with us. I am sorry the size of your queen room wasn't up to your expectations. I do feel the photos of the room on our website are very clear in show casing the size of the room. It is a small room and this is reflected in the price. Our en-suite rooms are attractively decorated, and come with lcd satellite tv, ipod docks and tea & coffee. They are very popular with budget conscious guests who would like a comfy bed, the ability to watch some tv, make a cuppa and take a shower but are happy to skip on the space. We have many room types to suit all needs and budgets and are happy to offer advice on how to choose the right room for you.
Kind Regards
Oscar
