“Amazing hotel and town!!!”
Reviewed 15 April 2014

This is a great place to stay both in location and overall hotel quality. the staff is extremely laid back, polite and helpful and there is a restaurant on the property that has GREAT food and a good selection of beers. upon arrival we were given drink certificates so we were already sold!
the town is small but scenic and the helicopter glacier tours and some nice coffee shops are within walking distance! this is a great place to spend a day or 2! you'll be happy I promise you!

Room Tip: if you pay up for a nicer room its worth the few extra bucks. the cheaper rooms are nice too tho...

We stayed on a powered site in December and loved our time here, the site wasnt overly busy so our stay in the rainsforest was great.
It is a really short walk to the restaurants, bars and shops.
The facilities were good however we didnt use the kitchen or BBQ area so cannot comment, they were in the middle of building extra toilets and showers but they were never too busy for our time there.
We used the on site bar/restaurant and had a gorgeous pizza, masses of potato wedges washed down with really good cuba libre's.
I definately advise staying here over the Top 10 as the location was so central.

This was a great place to stay prior to going up on the glacier. Comfortable rooms, toilets in a separate room to showers and plenty space in there, including a hairdryer. Plenty space in the kitchen and a bar that's really good fun. Ideal for backpackers in groups.

Friendly and helpful staff gave us a free upgrade. Room was clean with big bathroom though the bed was quite soft. Cafe on site served great pizza but beer was a bit flat. Overall a pleasant stay at the rainforest retreat.

I went there with the Stray Bus, and enjoyed it very much. It's beautiful there - lovely views of the mountains, GREAT mattress, the staff is SUPERnice, polite and funny. The (Monsoon) bar has really good prices (4 dollar house wine until 9 - try to find that anywhere else?!) and a good flair - and they do awesome competitions every day (like win a Rafting trip). The kitchen is big enough for once. THey have a spa pool which fits 20 (!) people, which looked like tons of fun! And the hostel is close to everything you'd need in Franz Josef.

Only downpoints: Laundry is expensive (4 dollars for the washing machine, and the ineffective drier is 1 dollar for every 10 minutes) and they have Kiwi Experience staying there. While those (mainly 18-22 year olds, probably) people might be lovely during the day - at night they just wanna get drunk (fair enough) and they are REALLY noisy. I wouldn't normally complain about this, but it was to an extent where I couldn't go back to sleep once they'd woken me up at 3.30am, because our room was right above the kitchen (where they chose to shout for what felt like hours on end).

I did complain to the staff about that the next day and they were really nice about it and told me they will in all likelyhood employ a security guard who will make sure those kinda people keep the noise down after 10 or 10.30.

So, all good...

Room Tip: Try to get a room which isn't above the kitchen!

We stayed in a beautiful tree lodge for one night. The tree lodges are beautifully decorated with large decked areas looking into the canopy and ours had glimpses of the sounding mountains. We arrived early and was still able to check in immediately into our tree lodge even though it was only 11.00 am. The private hot tub session which is complementary with the tree lodge was fun. The facilities were excellent we had a meal in their Resturant was all very convenient. We only wished we could stay longer, this was our favourite hotel of out 3 week holiday.

We were very surprised and impressed by this place. We were met by friendly service and upgraded to a cottage. At dinner we were given colouring in for our 20 month old daughter. We had a lovely dinner & free drink. Very cool.
