“Gheko Village”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 August 2014

We stayed in the gheko house and wow, we were very impressed. 6 adults, 5 kids, loads of room and one of the best settings I've stayed at. Modern, clean, tv in each room, great showers, great layout. Very private and quiet, we didn't see or hear anyone else. The private spa pool right outside meant the disapointment at the hot pools being closed was short lived. Thoroughly recommend it to big groups. Just couldn't fault anything and none of us wanted to leave.

Room Tip: Gheko Village! Awesome.

Nice clean place to stay with varying levels of clients. If you choose to stay here, and I probably would stay here again when I am in Franz Joseph, you really need to know what you are staying at. This is a pretty quirky place. It has everything from drive up pad for campers with hookups, to dormitories for young tour groups and there are the "tree-houses". We stayed in a 3 bedroom 'tree-house" that was really nice. However, one full bath and one shower (no sink or toilet). Our friends stayed in another that was two unconnected room and another shared wall 1 br with a living room, but they each had a full bath?? Don't be confused, they are not really tree-houses they are houses made of wood and the property is located in a sort of forest. Front desk tried real hard but was overwhelmed. Wifi was free but according to the front desk we should just use the computers in the office as the connection is spotty. Everything in town is close so have no worries about this. Don't expect 4 or 5 start accommodations and you wont be disappointed. Relax, you are on vacation in one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Restaurant was average at best. However the bar was fun.

Room Tip: Google Maps and talk with the front desk to make sure you are comfortable with where you are staying...

Hi HowieCanoe
Many thanks for choosing to stay at the Rainforest Retreat and for your review. You are right we have many different room types for all budgets and needs and we are very happy to help anyone who would like information or help on finding the most suitable room. Since your stay we have had a major upgrade of our wifi so speeds have been greatly improved although Franz Josef still is a long way off having super fast broadband. Its one of the downsides of living in a beautiful yet remote location. I hope you can make it back to us again before too long.

Nice settings of Rainforest. The place is huge, plenty of ground to wander around. High pressure hot shower, there's a fat cat in backpackers kitchen, and 2 dogs around reception area, love the animals. Wifi was pretty slow though.

Room Tip: rooms other than backpackers are much cleaner and better sheets.

I loved it here. My only complaint is that the Monsoon bar did not have any vegan meals on offer. Prepare to starve if you are cruelty free.

Nice how there is a free spa available and the hotpools are right across the road.

The room was small but clean. The shower is strangely low, so be prepared to bend down and work those thigh muscles just to wash your hair - even if you're short!

Hi LennonRuggier
Many thanks for choosing to stay with us and offer your feedback. I am so happy to hear that you loved it here.
I'm sorry you didn't feel we catered well enough for vegans, we do have many vegetarian options on our menu and are happy to accommodate any meal requests.
I have just tried one of our showers as i haven't had this comment before, i'm 5 foot 8 the water went over my head without me bending but I will ensure any future showers will be height adjustable. Thanks again for the feedback.
Happy travels

The hostel is central to the beautiful town of Franz Joseph. The kitchen was massive with plenty of utensils and the resident fat ginger cat wandering around, which I loved! The hostel had a really good bar and restaurant with a great atmosphere- probably the best in town. One piece of advice would be to definitely opt for the more expensive dorms as opposed to the cheaper dorms, as they are a lot better. We stayed in the cheapest. It was a 5 bed dorm, dingy and small, and one of the beds was just 2 mattresses piled on top of each other! The wifi was average. They also have a massive hot tub and really helpful & friendly receptionists. Best place to stay in Franz Joseph.

Hi Cimmmy
Thanks for the Gr888 review! i am so pleased you enjoyed your stay in our hostel so much. Since you have left we have increased our wifi speeds and decorated our 5 bed dorms, sorry about the 2 mattresses, that one is a mystery but we are in the process of ensuring all our dorm beds have superior mattresses and believe we will have the comfiest dorm beds in the country.
I hope you can make it back to us again soon
Happy travels.

We stumbled across this one as we got lost looking for a campsite. They were very helpful, and, due to them just finishing signing in a large group from the kiwi tours, they gave us a very quiet room (upgrading us for free) to make sure we weren't disturbed too much. The facilities were good (only gripe was that there was no oven in the kitchen., decent ensuite, good location, very close to town. Heard good things about the restaurant but didn't go as it seemed expensive and lacked veggie options for the girlfriend. Also, the wifi signal was so bad we were told not to bother buying it, but local cafés have free wifi.

Room Tip: Go further from the central court area - quieter!

We spent a night in The Rainforest Retreat and it was awesome! The staff were friendly from the start, asking what our plans were and if we needed help getting around.
The rooms were spotless and cosy. The room we had was sensational value for money with plenty of heat on a canny chilly night!
After a long day of working we were greeted in the bar. Excellent beer, and food (mostly beer) of a high standard. The staff were hilarious, helpful and mega friendly ( Jo was professional and very welcoming). We played bingo, mingled and had a great night.
Whatever your reasons for staying, The Rainforest retreat is guaranteed to match your preferences. (Including hot tub) Thanks guys

Room Tip: Depends what you want. They have many options!!
