“Fantastic stay at Ribbonwood”
Reviewed 3 February 2014

Our stay at Ribbonwood was a highlight of our trip. It was wonderful to stay in Julie and Jo's beautiful property and to enjoy the amazing views from the windows in the upper floor of the home and the cottage. All the rooms in the home and the cottage are truly lovely and the breakfast was delicious. It was also a real pleasure to chat with Julie and Jo and to learn more about the area. If we are ever in the area again, we would be delighted to stay at Ribbonwood.

Our family of 5 recently spent 3 nights with Jo and Julie at Ribbonwood as we travelled down the west coast of NZ. We were given the whole upper floor of the house - plenty of space for ourselves and our 3 teenage boys. The accommodation was extremely comfortable and well maintained, everything spotlessly clean. Excellent breakfasts including home baked bread and fruit from the garden. The property is well located for Franz Josef and also the Okarito lagoon, from which we got the best view of Mt Cook and the Southern Alps. Jo and Julie as well as being excellent hosts are extremely knowledgeable about the local environment and were able to advise us on the best walks and places to visit. Highly recommended!

We stayed there for 1 night and rented 2 rooms. Rooms are very clean, spacious and comfortable. The owners are very friendly and willing to help in any matter like recommending restaurants and providing guidance for landmarks, petrol stations, etc. Owner even assisted preparing small birthday cake for my 40th. One of our best stays in NZ.

Crispy clean, gracious hosts, beautiful property and home, convenient location--all added up to a wonderful experience at Ribbonwood in the Franz Josef area. If you have an interest in the natural history of the area, Jo is a naturalist by profession. Jo and Julie are extremely knowledgable, guided us to excellent restaurants, hikes, wildlife center, etc. Both are involved in the Kiwi restoration project (the bird, not the people!). We stayed at the adjacent cabin, a great set-up. We stayed two nights, which we highly recommend so you can see the area.

Our families recently stayed at Ribbonwood Retreat while visiting Franz Joseph Glacier. I can't say enough about the owners Jo and Julie…everything was perfect! The setting was peaceful and calm….with a wonderful view. The rooms were impeccably spotless, clean and comfortable. I don't think there is a better breakfast in all of NZ…the fresh baked items, eggs and fruits were spectacular. Many of the food items were grown in their garden…we just loved everything! Our only regret is that we didn't stay longer.

My family stayed at Ribbonwood for a day in January and our visit couldn't have been nicer. The house is very spacious and clean, the property is magnificent, and Julie and Jo are fantastic hosts. We really enjoyed the very interesting conversation. My only regret is that we didn't stay longer and contact them soon for activities in/around Franz Josef. If you like B&Bs, you will love Ribbonwood Retreat.

From the moment we stood at the front door to the moment we left Julie & Jo couldn't have been nicer. Lovely personal welcome written on a little blackboard at the front door. Beautiful home made baking, spotless and homely accommodation and very helpful with booking tours and suggesting a free ride in a stretch hummer courtesy of Blue Ice restaurant.....what could be more perfect than that?!
