“Great location and hospitality”
Reviewed 21 April 2014

We spent one night at Ribbonwood en route to Wanaka. The B&B is in a beautiful setting with views towards the glacier. Jonathan was very hospitable and slices of Julie's fruit cake on arrival was a nice touch. As we were the only guests we were offered the cottage behind the main house. This was a good choice. It has all facilities and plenty of space. Jonathan was very helpful re local attractions and restaurants. We followed his recommendation for dinner and were not disappointed. Breakfast was brilliant. Home-baked bread with a full, cooked plate of eggs, bacon and vegetables. However,we have to question the tariff of $240 p/night. In our recent experience this is on the high side. Ribbonwood is as good as other B&Bs and not as isolated as some we have stayed at.

Room Tip: Go for the cottage if it is available

out of three nights in franz josef, we spent first night in a hotel and remaining 2 in ribbonwood retreat. the difference in hospitality was quite stark. jo and julie treat you as good as their own family members. breakfast was really good, they made special arrangement for my vegetarian in -laws. all in all i suggest you try to book this place first if u are going to franz josef, and look elsewhere only if its fully booked.

We loved this stayJo and Julie made us so welcome and were full of good advice. This included the Okarito Coast and Forest. One of the best places we visited in NZ.Only a short drive away
Rooms here are lovely .We stayed in the cottage which is a delight.Excellent amenities and very clean.Lots of interesting details and the garden setting is charming.
You can find out a lot about NZ talking to these two.Enjoyed listening to Jo talking about his dad.DFC in WW2 ! They have a great attitude and perspective on life.
The breakfasts were the best we had in NZ.Lovely fresh and healthy ..Superb pancakes and a quality cooked plate of food.Lots of produce from the garden.
A must place to stay on a NZ tour

We were offered an upgrade to the cottage as were were the only guests staying. Cottage is an understatement as it is a beautifully equipped cabin with contemporary design and superb views towards the setting sun. Jo and Julie were very helpful and great to talk to and breakfast was taken in the main house and was excellent. Just to sit out and enjoy the tranquil surroundings was a pleasure.

Only one minus point, it's a few km into town, but who cares!

We stayed two nights on the top floor (two room plus a bath). We loved the rooms; we loved the breakfast; we loved the location; and we loved the hosts. Jo and Julie went out of their way to entertain us, give us tour advice, and accommodate our breakfast needs. The entire place was especially clean and well kept.

We stayed four nights at Ribbonwood retreat on a recent 5 week tour of New Zealand. The cottage is beautifully furnished and we loved the views from the decking. Breakfasts were excellent and set us up well for a day's walking. It was good to meet and chat with other guests over the breakfast table. Julie and Jo were the perfect hosts making us feel really welcome and providing insights into the local area so that we could make the most of our stay.We look forward to visiting Ribbonwood again when we are next in NZ.

Room Tip: The cottage is superb
