“Top class dive holiday”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 January 2013

13yo son and I went spent a week in Lissenung. The location is unbelievable and Dietmar and Ange have created a piece of paradise. Staff were fantastic - Ange, Dietmar, Ian, Sandy, Simon and Nozaki, dive guides, kitchen staff, room attendants etc. Management warned us that diving in Dec wasn't the best time of the year with visibility "down" to 20-25m in most sites. We put up with this :) Dive guides were awesome - tell them what you want to see and more often than not they could find it (except the mandarinfish!). The house reef dive has to be one of the best shore dives anywhere! Rooms are basic but better than we were expecting. Food was fantastic. The kitchen staff are absolute legends. Try the crusted fish. The staff made a cake to celebrate son's 100th dive - a really nice touch. Definitely going back!

Hi Dave & Caleb,

Many thanks for your awesome comments! I actually replied shortly after you posted them, but for some reason, they never made it live.

Dietmar, Nozaki, Sandy, Ian and I really enjoyed your company and hope we will indeed see you back here one day soon.
I can't believe you didn't get to see the Mandarinfish!! I don't actually remember that! Did you go and your guide didn't find them? Oh well, it just means you HAVE to come back! ;)
Would you like me to e-mail you the herb crusted fish recipe?

Talk soon, big hugs to you and Caleb,
Ange

hi i want to write a review praising this little island and the owners and the staff, i travelled alone and was a bit nervious landing at the Kavieng Airport as it was dark. Once i cleared the gate i met the most wonderful girl Nozaki who took me to the van and met the other couples going to the island.
After a short bus ride we arrived at the harbour and the boat crew helped with the bags and we were given rain coats as it was a bit choppy, When we reached the island we were met by the nicest couple Ange and Dietmar who made me feel so welcome and then i got to my own little hut, what a setup it was so nice with the best setout and the deck had the most amazing view.
We then went for dinner at the best resturant i have ever eaten at, the food was cooked well and so fresh and after a few beers i knew all the guests and we all chatted for hours. The morning was stunning with views of the island and a very nice breakfast with the very friendly and shy kitchen girls who keep the area so clean. The diving was outstanding with vis and locations and the dive master Angmai new i was an experienced diver so he dived with the group and kept a close watch but let us dive the dive we wanted to do, he pointed out heaps of things local to the sites.
All the staff were aa credit and one of my fondest memories would be the night security guys would call out hello Mr George when i was on my deck having a beer.
loved the place and will be back and made friends with every guest and had the best new year.
The level of care shone thru even after we left as there was a mixup at the airport but when Ange found out about this she brought us in fresh cold water and sat with us till it was all sorted out

Room Tip: get room 2 it has no ensuit but you get the whole side of the isand to yourself and the toilet is al...

Hi George,

I actually replied a while ago to this, but for some reason, it never got posted.

Dietmar and I absolutely loved having you here! You were so easy going, great sense of humour and just so much fun. What a great belated Xmas present did we have, hey? Thanks so much for letting me use your footage of our turtle babies hatching.

We look forward to having you here again soon, but next time, please behave at the airport so I don't have to come and rescue you again! ;) ;)

Cheers,
Ange

First time in PNG, booked everything online and couldn't have done it easier. From Cairns only a few hours to get there. Be aware that everything works PNG time, do not panic if you believe you are late for everything, because you are not! especially on the island, the staff works things around so that you enjoy it, it's relaxed and the boat to go diving won't leave without you. That was because we were only a few guests on the island, it might be a little different when the island is booked out. The location is stunning, a real private island with beach all around, and at the time we were there, it felt like it was only us on the island. We met the other divers when dining or diving that's it. So if you ar up to some good diving and relaxed times outside dives, Lissenung is the place to go! Away from civilization, only you, your partner, the beach and the sun. Our dive guide was fantastic, a local from a neighbour island. He enjoyed bringing us out, tried to find us always the best places to dive, brought us to beautiful locations during surface intervals. He made us try some local products and made us meet his family and friends. They were all just lovely!!! We'll be back!

Hi Mel, many thanks for your lovely review! What a shame that we didn't get to catch up properly in Cairns last year, maybe this year, either at Lissenung or in Cairns? Talk soon!!

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 December 2012

G'day, my wife Jayne and I stayed at Lissenung resort for 11 days during November 2012 and found it the best little resort that we have ever stayed at. We are experienced divers and have traveled extensively including 5 trips to various places in PNG. We are pretty spoilt when it comes to diving and are pleased to say that there were no disappointments whatsoever while we were at Lissenung. This trip was our second in the area but the first time at Lissenung. We had previously stayed at another island resort in the Kavieng area and Lissenung is by far the best of the two. Prior to our trip we made contact with Ange and Dietmar and found them very open to discussions about their little piece of paradise and we put them in the "Good Friends" basket even before we arrived. The accommodation at the resort is very good and very comfortable with great verandahs and very short walks to the little sandy beaches for a quiet drink at sunset. We are also happy to say that the food on the island is very good and there is plenty of it. You won't go hungry on Lissenung. We looked forward to the evening meals with the other guests and Dietmar, Ange and Nozaki. They were always good for a chat and were very polite about my lousy jokes.
While we were there, there were only a few other guests and we pretty much had the place to ourselves for a few days. Talk about being spoiled. The diving is very good as well and the hot spots are only short runs by boat from the island. The dive guides, Nozaki and Angmai are very experienced and a pleasure to dive with and we even had the pleasure of diving with Ange and Dietmar when they had a day off from their management duties. No complaints from Jayne and I about the dives with heaps of critters both large and small to look at and photograph. We did 21 dives in 9 days each at a different dive site except where we asked to dive a site again. The water was warm and clear on just about every dive except our last dive in the mangroves on the B25 bomber "Stubborn Hellion". The dive was a good one just the same, particularly after reading the reports of how the aircraft went down. There are quite a few dive sites that we didn't manage to do but are looking forward to returning to Lissenung to have a look at them. There are some on the far side of New Hanover which is a fair way from Lissenung and which will need a bit more planning to do.
Just to summarise, the place is a divers delight. For those that want to get away from it all for a bit of peace and quite, this is the place for you. For beginner divers and snorkelers you will find the water warm and clear and the surroundings beautiful.
The only down side to this trip was that we had to leave the place.

Hi Jayne & Hairylegs! What an awesome review you guys wrote, thanks so much! I'm sure you only call us the best dive resort you've ever been to because we listened to your silly jokes like no-one else ever has! It's awfully quiet here without you, and we certainly look forward to having you both back here next year. Exploratory trip - here we come!!! Will e-mail you with details, talk soon!!

Our first time to PNG and we booked everything ourselves - easy. Flights from Brisbane to the Island only involved 4-5hours flying time including one internal flight.

Resort hosts helped out with all questions quickly via email prior to arrival.

In the 5 days of diving we had available we got in 20 dives, including one 6 dive day! Fantastic!

The house reef makes a great morning dive before breakfast and afternoon/dusk/night dive to finish the day. Depth ranges from 2-10m and visability up to 20m.

With the boat dives completely spoilt for choice. 40m deep wreck dives in 25m+ vis or coral walls watching the pelagic action of sharks, makerel and tuna on incoming tides or muck diving for the small and colourful. Reefs in amazing condition, no bleaching, little damage and huge variety with the Wecks "intact" - no collecting souveniers allowed - everything still on view!

The island itself was relaxing, staff very friendly and every effort made on presentation and making the stay fun! Food fresh and ample with seafood and chicken dishes. Mobile phone reception if you want it but no 3G network. Wifi is available but hit and miss as everything is via satelite so a little cloud can break up any reception.

Remember your heading to an area that is remote and doesn't get a lot of visitors - that is the attraction!

Room Tip: We stayed in an ensuite room. There are ony 6 rooms like this, two per bungalow, all had a verhanda...

Hi Kelly & Andrew, many thanks for giving us such a wonderful recommendation! We really enjoyed your company and look forward to seeing you again next year. Will keep you posted on the exploratory trip for next year. Oh, haven't found your weight pocket, unfortunately. Nozaki spent a whole dive at Deep Pete searching for it, but no luck.

As Fly In Fly Out workers living in PNG, we have been visiting some of the country on our breaks. If you want to go somewhere quiet with your own little beach & fabulous snorkelling, this is the place for you. The island only has a few bungalows & a lovely open restaurant/bar with sand floor. The concept of an honesty system for your drinks is very refreshing. For the 5 nights we were there we did not wear shoes at all. The house reef was just great for snorkelling & you can walk around the island at low tide. We had 2 deck chairs by the beach under very shady trees where we spent a lot of time relaxing & reading or having a sunset drink. We were met at the airport & enjoyed a 25 minute boat ride to the island. What an excellent choice this resort is.

Hi guys, thanks so much for the great review! We really enjoyed your company and it's great to see some ex-pats enjoying what PNG has to offer. That little spot at "sunset beach" is awesome, isn't it? Great for sun-downers.....
Hopefully, we'll see you up here again before you leave PNG! Take care, and thanks again!!

I stayed here with friends for 3 days.

Staying here was a great experience, with wonderful diving only a short boatride away, and great snorkelling on the island's reef. The food was limited - but excellent, fresh crab every night. Owners/managers were friendly and helped us organize dives/fishing trips in a very professional way. The bungalows are very comfortable too. Feel lucky for having had the chance to experience Lissenung first hand!

Thank you for the lovely comments! Our chilli mud crabs are famous, you can't get bigger crabs than the ones here in New Ireland. I'm glad you enjoyed the snorkelling and the relaxed atmosphere at Lissenung.
