“Slice of Heaven and More - A definite MUST!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 August 2014

What are all the things one can think of that make up a PERFECT holiday?

Great accommodation, a perfect host, fantastic tours, activities on tap, transfers on time, a location to absolutely die for and all wrapped in a package of natural beauty that is very hard to beat - that best describes our stay at Sanbis!

Sanbis met, exceeded and kept on exceeding all of our expectations and that's saying something!

LOCATION LOCATION

Mbabanga Island (on which Sanbis Resort is situated) and the surrounding islands and waters are close to what is best described as a eco-ark of species. If you are into seeing marine life and terrestrial wildlife that you has not seen before, then Sanbis and its environs cannot be beat!

If you are into the perfect pacific photo shot of waters that are every shade of blue that ones imagination can conjure, then this is also the place for you.

Sanbis is beautifully situated facing the majestic island of Kolombangara. The sunsets and sunrises are simply breath-taking I was over-awed by beauty that is hard to define.

ACCOMMODATION

Sanbis operates on a eco-friendly basis. The cabins which all facing the ocean have been thoughtfully spaced so that privacy is assured. The cabins are clean, well maintained and again exceeded my expectations. I loved relaxing on the balcony overlooking the water - a lovey part of each day for us there.

MEALS

All meals were beautifully prepared in a spotless kitchen by staff who really know how to cook up a storm! One can chose from a menu that changes frequently enough to inspire one to try everything! I recommended the wood-fired pizza's which are the best I have ever tired outside of Australia.

ACTIVITIES

SCUBA, snorkeling, fishing or anything that looks like relaxing - Sanbis has in spades! Go exploring through a local village...pop over to Gizo via boat or get out and explore Olesana Island or even majestic Kolombangara Island. Whatever one wants is never an issue. That is extremely pleasing because this is where a lot of resorts fall down in my expectation. I will never forget the day Ravi took us to Olesana! An island all to ourself all day! One can choose a BBQ lunch or sandwiches to take. How fantastic is that?? :-) We had 7 hrs of bliss...its hard to beat!

RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL

The location is very remote and therefore it is beholden to travellers to be prepared for the challenges of remote holidaying. To get to Sanbis one must travel to Honiara (capital of the Solomons) and then transfer to Gizo and then a boat transfer to Sanbis. All day traveling can be tiring but well worth the effort!

Please include mosquito repellent and 30+ sunblock in amounts necessary for your stay.

From an environmental point of view also be aware that coral comes right up to the shoreline here and should not be walked on. Sea grass meadows (more rare than you can imagine now in the oceans) are where Dugongs like to graze and should also be treated with respect.

Lastly be appreciative of the environment we are all in and treat the ocean with respect and have heaps of fun!

FINAL WORDS OF PRAISE

In my experience, its a rare combination to have a location that can be best described as heaven and the staff that are a delight to just talk with. Their genuine smiles as I stumbled through rusty Solomoni Pisin (Pisin blong mi buggerup alketa LOL) always made me feel so welcome and relaxed. Hans is to be congratulated in his courtesy and friendliness as host (& owner) and ably backed up by staff that are just too too awesome!

Hans and everyone: tanku tumas alketa!!

Room Tip: All cabins are excellent....and try out the Lodge! :-)

If you live in Honiara, this place is an excellent get away. We went up and fished, snorkelled and chilled out. Hans was very entertaining, the staff were very good and if you go in expecting an Eco-friendly resort then it will deliver. If you are wanting a 5 star luxury resort then you must be in the wrong country!

Wow! What a visionary project by eccentric and entertaining owner-builder Hans Mergozzi! Constructed from local materials, this place was an "Eco Hotel" before the term was even coined.

We ate amazing fresh seafood every night served by fun and friendly staff. Having only six bungalows makes this a relaxing, exclusive resort; however, there is also the option of taking a boat ride into town if you want more company.

For adventurous souls, the in-house dive master will take you to wonderful sites. Or you can get the hotel boat out to nearby world-class surf locations with 6-9 foot barrels that are completely free of surfers!

Although getting there involves a few travel legs, it's well worth the journey.

I've travelled regularly for 20 years and this is my favourite island paradise. It was one of the most fun holidays I've ever had. Thanks Hans! You're a character!!

Room Tip: The newer bungalow out on the point has the most commanding views.

This place is spectacular! Bungalows were cute and immaculate. Food was delicious. Snorkelling was great, straight off the jetty, crystal clear water. Nothing was too much to ask of the staff and the owner. Thoroughly enjoyed my stay here.

I've just returned from my 5th trip to Sanbis (being based in Honiara) but this is the first time I've written on Trip Advisor, as my time in the Solomons is coming to an end soon.... I simply believe that Sanbis is the best resort in the Solomon Islands and I can say that with some confidence, having stayed at Tavanipupu, Uepi, Fatboys, Wilderness etc. The atmosphere is relaxed but attentive, the accommodation is perfect, the use of local resources and the environment feels totally natural and sustainable and the staff are terrific. In particular, I have enjoyed the diving with Ravia and the boys over the last few years but every aspect - from the woodfired pizzas down the front, to the cold beers, to the seemingly endless supply of crayfish is all done in exactly the way I want when I'm holidaying in the Solomons.
Some suggestions:
Leave yourself enough time to go diving and fishing on separate days. Doing both in a day is pretty exhausting I always find and you might be pushed for time.
The diving around Gizo is beyond belief. Tell Ravia what you're looking for (Wrecks, coral, big fish, rays etc...) and then just let him guide you.
On the day that you leave (or before), try to leave yourself enough time to head into Gizo for a look around. It's a great little town - like stepping back in time to the quintessential Pacific town in the 50s. There's a new little bar called Waterfront that's doing great meals at ridiculously cheap prices you should try out before you fly.
If you can afford it, stay at The Lodge at Sanbis - you don't have to, as the rest of the resort is pretty spectacular but The Lodge is simply the best spot to kick back in the country.
There are some other great resorts around - the diving at Uepi is obviously brilliant, the surfing at Papatura is hard to beat and the welcome and the accommodation at Wilderness is spectacular. But for an overall package, I think Sanbis takes the cake and I hope it isn't too long before I can find an excuse to return.
To Hans and Ravia and everyone else over there, thanks for looking after me so often - hopefully see you soon!

Room Tip: There are only 6 bungalows and they're all pretty good - if you want to splash out though and yo...

Just got back from our honeymoon in the Solomon Islands, spent 4 nights at the Sanbis resort. Beautiful location! There is a over water bar with stunning views, you can jump straight off the jetty into the crystal clear waters! Snorkeling is very good! We also opted to take a trip to Olsana island which is a short boat trip away, beautiful spot! Staff were very willing to take you on boat trips at a moments notice, very accommodating! The food was excellent and served by very friendly staff. Our bungalow was lovely and comfortable, it was not perfect luxury but who needs that! It was lovely to live the simple life for a while and enjoy a relaxing holiday without the hustle and bustle of a thousand tourists. Thank you to Hans and his staff for a lovely stay!

I have spent 6 days at the resort. There are six bungalows and a restoran and a bar. The place is very quiet and not crowded. The stuff is very very friendly. The food is very good. The accomodation is good. Those that seek perfect luxery may find few objections but those who seek true vacation, good relaxed holiday and a good blend with nature will be satisfied. The diving was very nice and not expensive. The coral reefs are in a good shape with ample marine life. The whole stay is acctualy quite well balanced value for money wise.

The resort is safe and you feel very relaxed. The picky ones should go to Bora Bora and those wanting true relaxation should come here. It is not easy to manage such a resort in a country that has yet to realize the income it may get from tourist industry. On the other had this is an advantage to those not to happy with crowded touristic places.
