Took the Behind The Scenes Tour, offered monthly. What an interesting house - it's all the antebellum grandeur and jaw dropping decor you'd expect from a mansion of 15K square feet. Was impressed at the technology introduced into the house when new, like running hot and cold water (and indoor bathrooms) and the central heating/ventilation system, and an elevator - amazing considering it was built between 1855-1859. This tour literally takes you all through the house, looking into the ceiling above the dining room and ending all the way on top of the cupola. Quite a difference when you go from the fully restored first floor to the upper levels, gives you an appreciation for how much has to be done to restore these fine homes from another era. No indoor photography allowed, but we were able to take pics from the cupola.

Hay House is absolutely beautiful and the restoration that has been done is immaculate.

The wooden, recessed, double doors made, I think, of Georgia pine and finished to look like walnut or cherry were incredible and the whole architecture of the house to mirror the opposite ends of the rooms was perfect. At the end of the ballroom, the doors were even curved to match the curving of the wall opposite.

The dining room was the highlight, having a barrel vaulted painted ceiling, walls with a painted frieze at the top and a second lower frieze of mouldings of bright fruit, and mellow golden furniture. I could have stayed in there for hours admiring it.

There is still a lot of restoration to do on the upper floors, but the basement can be seen, including the stores to keep food and wine cool under the front steps of the house, which have glass to let in light below.

I feel that they are missing a trick here as I bought postcards and would have loved to have bought a book about the house, but there wasn't one available. I hope they produce one in the future as I'm sure a lot of people would be interested in buying and reliving their visit through pictures of the house.

Interesting architecture and history and worth a visit. The home is well preserved and impressive. There are tour times so calling ahead would be recommended. We missed the tour and didn't want to wait an hour and a half for the next one so we missed out on more detailed history but it was still worth a visit. I'm glad we saw it, but would not likely go back.

WOW!! Gotta see it to believe it. Absolutely gorgeous! It's almost like stepping back in time. Enjoyed learning and seeing first hand how they lived years ago.

This house is impressive! I had never been in mansion prior to this. My husband and were both in awe. The main floor is unreal; the restoration is immaculate. I loved the contrast between the totally restored main floor and the unrestored second floor. The lady who gave the tour knew a phenomenal amount of history of the house and the area. My husband and I were lucky enough to have her all to ourselves the day that we stopped by. As a point of interest, she told us that they do special tours where you can go inside the walls to see how the house built. You can also see the top two or three levels of the house on the special tour. The regular tour only shows you the basement, first floor and second
floor. I would love to go back in 10 years and see the restoration progress on the second floor.
