Rememb er the old real estate saying about the three most important things in real estate being location, location, location? It's tlrue in real estate, but with lodging, location is great but it also has to be backed up by good service from employees with positive attitudes, nicely furnished and updated rooms, a variety of amenities and if there is a cafe or restaurant, good food at reasonable prices. There is another old saying that you never get a second chance to make a good first impression.

The Red Lion's location in Port Angeles is a solid 5 out of 5 stars. It's located right on the edge of the water and those willing to pay a premium for the waterfront views will be rewarded with great, sweeping views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and on a clear night, the lights of Victoria, B.C., about 18 or 19 miles due north. If you don't, then your view, either north or south, is of the big parking lot between the front, waterfront building, and the back building.

There is a separate building for checking in, and that is where we first ran into trouble. This was our first impression which you never get a second chance to make. One very young woman was trying to check in a whole roomful of people, some with children, who started fidgeting more and more as the minutes went by. Chneck in was painfully slow. On elderly man sitting on the couch, kept coughing very, very loudly -- like a hacking snort -- about every 10 to 15 seonds, without ever covering his mouth. This went on for maybe ten minutes until his group finally got checked in and they left. Finally, after more than 15 to 20 minutes of waiting, I caught the front desk clerk's eye and said, "You really need more help on the front desk." At that, she finally went and got a second person to help speed up the agnozingly slow process.

I also wanted to split the bill with my road trip buddy, but she said the computers were offline and she couldn't do that. OK, maybe this was just an anomaly, and does not normally happen -- at least I hope so.

But then came the billing nightmare, which as of this writing, 5 days after our check in, is still going on. They double billed me, billing the entire price of the room plus $25 for a total of $239 that they put on a hold against my checking account. Plus, in addiiton, the young, very inexperienced woman on the desk also billed me for my half of the room, or another $107.43. Then to make things worse, since we had been told they couldn't split the bill, we left the next morning to catch the early morning ferry and just took the bill they slipped under our door. But since we didn't come in to check out, they then billed another $107.46 against my checking account. So now, my $194 room has a $454 hold on my checking account! Again, I'm sure this is not the usual way of doing business. I called them to try and straighten this out, and the same woman kept puttin me on hold then re-answering the phone, each time saying she was putting me through to the front desk manager -- who I finally got. Front desk manager was terrific, as polished and professional as the front desk clerk was not. She even called my bank to get at least the $239 cancelled, and also offered to cut the rate for the room in two because of the hassles I had gone through. That was a very nice and generous gesture, and greatly appreciated. But the manager is not on call at the front desk, so those who are very much need more training, and the common sense to know when to call for additional support up front to speed up the checking in process.

The waterfront view room we had was nicely decorated and clean, but standard. Adequate size, but not large. Standard layout with two queen beds agaisnt one wall, facing the TV/bookcase ons the other wall. Against the view wall was an upholstered chair and next to the TV, a standard desk with a business style office chair. Standard amenities included a micro fridge and a coffee maker with decaf as well as regular coffee, both nice touches, but something that appears in thousands of standard motel rooms. The room was, in a word, average, nothing outstanding or unusual. Having said that, there really is not anything wrong with "average", since so many rooms at so many places are cut out of the same formula for size and layout and amenities. It offered a small balcony, which was nice, with two chairs so guests could sit outside and drink in the view. Right in front of the rooms is a walking path, and then the beach.

I have eaten in the Red Lion restaurant several times in the past, but not this time, as there was not enough time before we had to catch our ferry to Victoria, B.C. My memories of their restaurant is that it is a pleasant space, and although I have eaten there several times, nothing jumps out, either good or bad. So I assume it was all OK, not spectacularly good or unusual, but good, average hotel food. And again, there is nothing wrong with average -- average is lthe norm, and since Trip Advisor says 5 stars is Excellent, and 4 stars is Very Good, then in my opinion, 3 stars should be rated as Good. It is good, just not great, but at $214 and change for a view room, a bit pricey. But if they could get all of the services to come up to to the standard of their great location, they could be 4 stars Very Good. Maybe even 5 stars Excellent. The potential is certainly there.

Room Tip: For about $20 to $25 more, you can have a waterfront view room instread of a room with a view of the...

Chose a second story room, on the water side. It was clean, comfortable and had a lovely view of the bay and the boat traffic. The staff was friendly and courteous. Easy access to Port Angeles and the surrounding areas.

We have been staying at this hotel 3 to 4 times a year for the past 14 years. We love it. We always stay 2nd floor waterfront and love to sit on the balcony & watch the water. It is clean, well appointed and the staff always is professional and lovely to talk to. We wouldn't stay anywhere else. We do not eat at the hotel as we have found some other wonderful places to eat in town as recommended by local folks.

Room Tip: Second floor waterfront all the way

The rooms were nice. The breakfast for the price was very good!! The staff had always treated us well. About 3 times a year I stay here when visiting my son and friends. I did live in Port Angeles, WA, now I Iive in plymouth MA. for this area it is a nice quiet hotel. On a clear day you can see the lights of Victoria BC. An added plus.

We arrived to find a beautiful outdoor pool and hot tub. And happy hour for great priced drinks and appies was from 3:00-6:00! Food and service were really good! Rooms were very clean and beautifully decorated. Beach and pier directly out front. Music in the park on a wed. night. Close to everything in town you would want to see and do. We would definitely choose this hotel again.

We loved staying at the Red Lion. The rooms are very large, and were very clean. We appreciated the mini fridge and microwave in the room. The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. The location was also very convenient for restaurants around town, and visiting Olympia national park. We paid extra for a water view which was well worth it.

The hotel doesn't have an elevator, which was no issue for us, but may be a problem for others.
