“Great hotel, but don't expect spectacular service”
Reviewed 21 July 2010

I found the The Downtown Hotel through web searches for lodging on the Olympic Peninsula. I called to make reservations for a queen bedroom with bathroom, and asked the clerk to send me a confirmation receipt through email. Despite several emails to the hotel staff, I never received one.

When we arrived at the hotel at 6pm, we walked right up the stairs to the lobby (the hotel sits above a restaurant), only to find no one at the desk. There was a sign, saying to call the attendant and/or the manager and listed two phone numbers. The first was busy, and the second rang a phone sitting on the front desk before finally going to voicemail. We walked around the building, knocking on closet doors and asking other guests if they knew how to reach someone to check us in. Eventually, we just decided to take a walk around town and come back a little later.

Half hour later, when we checked back in, we caught the attendant as he was returning to the desk, and were able to get checked in. Apparently, the front desk clerk is usually in one of the rooms, rather at the desk, and you have to call for him if needed. (Of course that would be no big deal, if he answered the phone calls!)

After our initial concerns with checking in, the rest of our stay was event-free. The room was clean and had a fan to help with cooling (and noise), so no complaints there. The ensuite bathroom had a toilet and single-person shower stall, while the sink was in the bedroom itself. Although our window looked out onto the roof next door, we could see a hint of Strait of San Juan de Fuca behind it.

There is a small parking lot dedicated to the hotel on the next block, probably not big enough if all hotel guests need to park there, but we always got a spot.

Yes, the bathroom is down the hall, but everything is very clean. There was absolutely no "gross" factor. We stayed for 2 nights and only once did we have to wait a minute or two for a bathroom. You have a sink in your room and that helps. Bed was very comfortable, new linens and towels and a bedspread that reminds you of grandma's house. The room could have used another light by the other side of the bed. We had requested the "quiet side" and were not bothered by street noise at all. The walls are a bit thin and I was concerned the first night with a toddler running in the hall but everyone settled down by 9:30 PM or so and respected the need for quiet. I would absolutely stay there again.

Quite simply this hotel is in immaculate condition and was spotlessly clean. Dont be afraid to pay a bit less to use a shared bathroom if you are on a budget. For what you pay its terrific value for money. The cafe downstairs does pleasant comfort food.

I stayed here for one night (a Saturday) as part of a weekend in the Olympic Peninsula. I was a bit unsure of what to expect when I discovered the hotel entrance is just a doorway sandwiched between a couple of shops at street level, but once upstairs the hotel seems quite expansive. I stayed in a room with a private bathroom. The rooms were quite large, immaculately clean and well maintained. All for a low-low price. The only thing is that I could imagine sounds/voices would penetrate in the door, but it was very quiet when I was there so this was not a problem for me. Overall, I was very impressed and would certainly stay there again and would recommend the place highly to others.

the staff was friendly and helpful. I was so pleasantly surprised by the size and comfort of the room I stayed a second night. it was clean and fresh, nicely furnished with simple serviceable pieces. it's a perfect place to stay on a budget. there were many young people with back packs, mountain bikes, and a young family.

Wonderful spacious clean rooms and bathrooms. Excellent price. Polite personal service. But in a mildly noisy location. Great location if you are not a light sleeper. If you are used to noise such as a large semi going by at night great place. I would stay again however I would bring earplugs just in case. Great location to Ferry just a stones throw away. But lots of traffic. Excellent restaurant downstairs!!!

The management has done a very nice job on this old building. My king room was clean and nicely decorated and there's original art in the hallway. Staff was friendly and helpful. One block from the Victoria ferry. Great price.
