Interesting place where you pay what you feel is fair and eat what you want. Eclectic atmosphere with a far eastern feel. I went there only twice because of a run-in with the owner. She assumed I was a massage student from next door and was coming to take advantage of the potentially free food. Haven't been back since.

“A homey food experience like none you've had before”
Reviewed 6 January 2008

When's the last time you ate at a non-profit restaurant with a mission statement? If you're like me, probably never. One World Cafe in downtown Salt Lake City is an usually place and a refreshing break from your typical restaurant experience. Full disclosure, I fell in love with this place as a local, but whenever I'm traveling somewhere new I wish it would appear wherever I am.

One World is an unusual place to eat for a lot of reasons:
1. There's no set menu. Every day you'll find a new assortment of soups, salads, hot dishes, and desserts. Everything is organic, and it's about 90% vegetarian, though they do serve meat. You walk in, grab a plate, and are served the exact quantities of the exact foods you choose.
2. There are no set prices. At the end of your meal, you pay what you think it was worth, by dropping cash, check, or the receipt from the credit card charge you ring up yourself into a small treasure chest. Suggested prices are from $13-$20 for a full meal, depending on what and how much you eat.

The atmosphere is comfortable and homey, with a series of rooms all decorated and arranged differently. You can sit in a wood-paneled room with regular tables, or lounge on a couch in the back. There's a definite Eastern religion theme to the decor.

The food itself ranges from tasty to exquisite, depending on who's cooking that day. To me, it feels like what I'd cook at home, but with more variety and no effort (though I'm an adventurous vegetarian cook, so for some it might push the boundaries a little more).

If you're looking for a tasty, healthy, adventurous meal that you can linger over and feel good about, this is the place.
