“Perfect location”
Reviewed 16 August 2011

Stayed here for 1 night with my wife on our way from Yellowstone to Capitol Reef NP. Hotel is in an excellent location, right in the centre of town. Restaurants, bars and sites are all within walking distance. Disappointed that the room did not have a fridge, expect that from a Marriott. What you can also expect is Internet charges from your room, but there is free Internet from the onsite Starbucks. Otherwise staff were vey friendly and the onsite gym and pool is great.

Pro's--Central location, very close to numerous restaurants, stores, etc. The hotel and the rooms were very clean. The room was spacious, complete with modern furnishing, flat-screen t.v. I had a "temple view" which was mostly construction but beyond the downtown area were beautiful mountain views. The indoor pool was very pleasant (with retractable roof).

Con's--The bed sheets were too small for the mattress. By the next morning, I was practically sleeping on the bed pad. In the corner of the room, by the bathroom, the wallpaper was peeling. My bathroom door was warped and I couldn't close it completely. It appears as if management is taking proactive steps in improving the property. There was a letter from the manager stating workman were painting the outside of the building. I hope the improvements extend to the inside as well.
The hotel charges $12.95 per day for wireless internet but you can use the business center computers or plug in your laptop in the business center area. If you consume the water in the room, the hotel will charge you $3.50 per bottle. They charge about the same amount in the gift shop. Since I was unaccustomed to the low humidity and high elevation, I was drinking LOTS of water. There is a Rite Aid right around the corner where you can stock up on basics like water, snacks, band-aids, etc. However, from what I understand, Utah has it's own versions of "blue laws" where many stores are closed on Sunday, so take care to stock up early.

During the last two years, I have stayed at the hotel several times. I especially like its central location near Temple Square. It has close proximity to restaurants and shopping. If one were attending a convention at the Salt Palace, one would be adjacent. The hotel staff goes out of its way to give exceptional service. The rooms are in good order, but could use a slight facelift. That may be coming in light of the new adjacent City Creek Center opening in 2012.

My wife and I stayed at the Marriot for five nights.

The room and bed were very comfortable. The entire hotel was oddly clean. This was the cleanest hotel I have ever entered. The floors in the hallways were clean al the way to the carpet edge and there was no hint of dirt or age i any crevice anywhere that I could find.

Looking for dirt became a distraction for me and I was not successful.

The virtue ended with cleanliness.

Check in and parking - the valet parking service and the hotel bell staff are separate: they seem to be working for the same entity but are actually different. The parking lot is NOT owned by the hotel.

The valet guys lurk outside and are eager to assist with getting your car unloaded and bags placed on a luggage cart. But, they do not get your bags to the room. The bags are delivered by the hotel's bel staff.

We always accept assistance on check-in because we travel with a larger volume of luggage than most people. I believe in a fair tip for the assistance we receive. The two separate entities created confusion. I gave the first guy a $20 and asked him to split it with the guy that delivered the bags. This split did not occur.

The luggage issue diminished our check-in experience.

I had breakfast twice in the lobby restaurant and lunch and dinner. The food was horrible. Not merely average or bad but horrible. It would have been acceptable in 1972 but did not meet the standard of a modern hotel. Certainly not a hotel charging $170 per night for rooms and a fair nickel for the meals.

It seemed that the menu was prepared by a chef completely out of touch with developments in taste and nutrition of the past 40 years. Then, the actual preparation of the meal by the line cook was poorly executed.

I bumped into the hotel general manager and made a point of discreetly sharing my thoughts on the hotels food. He explained that they were not trying t be at the standard of "big city" hotels but were compensating with larger portions. I told him that his response was strange and that most of his hotel guests were likely comparing the food to NYC, San Fran or Paris because they were travellers and deserved delicious and healthy food.

The hotel desk staff were unaware that the TV's in the lobby had more channels including the sports channels I had been asking about.

The hotel lacked a concierge and the desk and bell staff were unable to suggest an alternate nearby restaurant. There were actually several restaurants reasonably close that were quite good.

There is a pizza restaurant a couple of locks away - Estes Pizza - that is terrific by any standard. Terrific and reasonably priced: worth noting of you are hungry or with a family.

Room Tip: All of the rooms are terrific - avoid the restaurants in the hotel.

We stayed here 2 nights over the 4th of July, I think we were about the only ones in the hotel. Location is excellent, right next to the Mormon Tabernacle which you can walk to and it is open fairly late at night. We had a high floor, 16th I think, and we had an outdoor deck with a couple of chairs. This worked out great for a view of the city and in our case, the fireworks which the closest was 1 block away. Awesome! The whole area around the hotel was safe and we did a lot of walking and looking, many choices very close. My wife says the best part was the dining room where we had the best breakfast of a 2 week vacation. Front desk and Valet parking very helpful, giving us great directions, towels to take with us to swim in the salt lake. Very quiet room, beds comfortable, outside deck great, room size was what you would expect for a normal hotel room with 2 beds, desk, etc.

Room Tip: ask for a high floor room for the view from the balcony
