To reach the NAS you have to drive pass a lot of beach access but do it! When you arrive there is a great covered area with a small shop rest rooms and lots of showers. Note, these are communal beach showers, no doors, not a lot of privacy.
They are always clean and neat. In the ranger station they are at the ready to answer all your questions from shipwreck stories to identifying shells. They have a hands on table that you can pick up and examine all types of shells and items found in the area. They offer on a first come first serve basis 2 beach wheelchairs, at no charge. The rangers are friendly and very helpful. A short walk down a ramp and you are greeted by the gulf of Mexico. There are picnic tables on the beach and no cars! The fee to get into this park is very low, I buy the yearly pass at $15.00.

This is a site to behold....piping plovers, gulls, terns on beach. Deer in marsh. Windsurfers, fisherman in Laguna Madre. Drove on beach as sand is hardpacked. This is heaven....

“Despite the names of the beaches, there is no shelling to speak of”
Reviewed 2 February 2012

We've visited South Padre Island several times and have always come home with a box full of pretty shells - sundials, conch, sand dollars, etc. - so we expected to do the same on Padre Island. That wasn't the case. In fact, we drove several miles without seeing anything more than shell bits - and a lot of trash. Because the beach isn't all that wide, four-wheel drive is a MUST - and in some spots, the loose sand and deep ruts make driving a little nerve wracking! Factor in the restriction on metal detecting and you wonder about the point of visiting. There is a nice gift shop and visitor's center though.
