We visited on a cold day in early December. Needless to say, the park wasn’t very busy, but we still enjoyed most of a day here. We walked on the beach near the visitor’s center, but didn’t stay too long before the cold winds off the ocean drove us inside. Inside the center was a small museum with some videos running and a gift shop. When we inquired about the day’s ranger-led programs, they offered to give a presentation on sea turtles just for us, which was nice because we got to interact with the ranger and ask lots of questions. You probably couldn’t hope for this kind of service in the busy summer months! There’s a stretch of beach you can drive on and we enjoyed that. We ate lunch in our vehicle surfside where great blue heron kept a mindful eye on us. Later, we joined a free three hour birding excursion with some knowledgable older folks who supplied binoculars and took us to some places and bird life we wouldn’t have found on our own. Even though we had to be in San Antonio this evening, we ended up staying in the park until almost dark (which in the winter happens just after 5 p.m.). It might be nicer to visit on a warmer day, but this was the day we had and we enjoyed it!
