My only meal here was very good and reasonably priced. Desert was good to very good. It is obvious that a great deal of thought is expressed in this restaurant.
Service was excellent.

The ambiance is delightful and quiet though there was music with vocals.

The seating was really comfortable and conversation was accentuated by the arrangement. The absence of TV and loud 'popular music' is a decided benefit.

My wife and I were pleasantly surprised by our first visit to Hiram Haines. We both got the evening special, which was beef stew, It was loaded with fresh vegetables and succulent, well seasoned pieces of beef. The stew was surrounded by a sweet potato and mashed potatoes, more than enough for even the heartiest of appetites. We topped the evening off with a fresh pear cobbler ala mode....a desert to die for. Throughout our dinner we were entertained by a lively Celtic Band.... comprised of six to ten talented musicians....they kept multiplying as the night went on! Liz was about as cute and delightful a waitress as we could possibly have asked for. She knew the menu well and steered us to some of her favorites. Lunch or dinner, a trip to Petersburg should definitely include Hiram Haines! Ask for Liz...you won't be disappointed!!

We stopped here for coffee and dessert and were not disappointed with either. The coffee was a special house blend served in a French Press. We had a lemon cheesecake sort of dessert that was super. The ambience is tremendous, with books and paintings/pictures lining the walls.

Hiram Haines has become a favorite pit stop for any night out for my wife and I. While we don't normally spend the whole evening at Hiram Haines we really enjoy our short visits for a beer and a snack. Their fruit and cheese platters are the perfect way to calm an appetite mid-afternoon walking through historic Petersburg, and a pair of beers or a serving of tea will give you time to enjoy the wonderful history of the building. Get the story from the owner, I've never been in and not seen him there. Better yet, have him autograph his book while you're in. Just as good as their snack platters are their selection of deserts. You'll often times be able to enjoy a desert to the sound of one of the many local musicians who entertain the small crowds on a Friday or Saturday evening. Be sure and take your time, the building is full of history, and It'd be a shame to miss this gem by being in a hurry.

This is a wonderful place for a nice bite to eat! The sandwiches are great, the atmosphere is cozy, and the staff is always wonderful! The history of the actual building only adds to the experience!
