We were just in Albuquerque for one night and decided on Sandia Peak Inn due to their price and positive reviews. It was a good experience. As others mentioned, it is run by a very helpful and friendly lady and is kept clean. It's right on Route 66 in an area that I didn't find questionable at all. It is on the road so there was some road noise in the room but I slept well. The room had comfy beds, a big flat screen TV, a mini fridge, and a microwave. There were very few outlets, which made it more difficult to charge our electronics. One of the outlets didn't work. It is not fancy, but it met our needs perfectly.
It has a small indoor pool and a breakfast area with vending machines and complementary breakfast. The breakfast was not too fancy, and had cereal, yogurt, fruit, oatmeal, pastries, toast, bagels, and waffles. I had a bagel with cream cheese and it was very fresh (unlike most places with breakfasts where they sit out).
There is obviously a lot of effort put into keeping this place nice, affordable, and convenient. We enjoyed our (albeit short) stay.
