“An Old Standby and A New Experience”
Reviewed 21 November 2013

From the appetizers to the offerings this old standby remains at the top end of the list in Albuquerque. It is a formal feel with a 'Ranchers' setting. If you didn't like the feel of a formal 'Bonanza' dining room in the old days you will like this ambience.
Steak is great, try the bone in rib eye. The vegetables are tasty, try the potatoes au gratin, with a hint of chile, and the deserts can be flambéed, try the creme brule or the bananas foster.
A nice attached bar with piano. The staff is friendly and welcoming.

Is there a downside, well the check can be described as high end, but then you know the old saying…. you get what you pay for.

“Best dry-aged steak!”
Reviewed 6 November 2013

My husband and I celebrate Valentine's Day here every year. Everything is good - but you have to get the cowboy cut bone-in ribeye! Very traditional, New Mexico interior - love the bison head, antler chandelier, saddle, etc. Great wait staff that have worked there for years.

“Excellent service and very good meat”
Reviewed 30 September 2013

Steak (from Nebraska) and prime rib (from New Mexico) were both very good quality and cooked just as ordered. Both were very meaty and flavorful, but I'd say a step below some of the prime steakhouses in NY and Chicago to which I've been. Prices were also, for the most part, a good deal less than those places (but not cheap by Albuquerque standards). Oddly, there was no NY strip or porterhouse/t-bone, our favorite steaks, but there was what looked like an excellent "cowboy cut" ribeye we did not try. Had the "baseball cut" sirloin, which we've never seen on a menu before. This was kind of halfway between a filet and a strip and was very tender.

Enjoyed the true tableside prepped caesar as an appetizer (I've heard there are now some places that prep a caesar tableside by using pre-prepped dressing, but not here -- all from scratch), and felt the service was top notch all the way.

“If you're a vegan, this place will freak you out!”
Reviewed 21 September 2013

I went here on a business trip and really liked it in a strange sort of way. A huge bison head over the fireplace stared at me while I ate my sirloin steak, au gratin potatoes, green beans & baby carrots, creme brûlée, and Pinot noir. Deer heads throughout the restaurant dissuaded me from ordering the venison. Not Bambi! It was a really good meal, and the servers make sure you are taken care of even if you're a solo traveller and not dressed in your best outfit.
There was a National Rifle Assn Awards going on at the same time, and a huge table of them sat directly in front of me, but as far as I could tell none of them was packing heat.
I felt as far removed from California and California cuisine as I think it's possible. Nice for a change, but it was probably my only visit. I do recommend you try it once!

“Great place to dine for a special occasion”
Reviewed 19 September 2013

The staff are wonderful, food is great. Overall a great place for a special occasion. We went for a romantic birthday outing and they didn't disappoint. Just very pricey - be prepared!
