Bed and Bread Hiouchi
Reviewed 12 April 2013

During a recent visit to Crescent City, I had the opportunity to spend one of my two night-stay in town in the Bed and Bread Hiouchi B&B--a superb place to stay with first-class hosts.

The house is located right by the Smith river--calming, serene but spectacular surroundings and views from my room and adjacent balcony.

My room was spacious and nicely decorated with a shared bathroom right across the hall. High quality bedding, towels and bathrobe were provided. All this in a very homey environment, with very gracious hosts, Curt and Meg, who entertain their guests, pay great attention to detail, and are fantastic cooks. A succulent breakfast was Included in my room rate.

I also enjoyed a delicious home made dinner which included local salmon and meatloaf with plenty of side dishes to choose from. Eating at the table with our hosts was indeed a wonderful experience, especially for me who are much more accustomed to stay in hotels.

Cons: none, unless you don't like dogs. The house dog is adorable and very, very quiet.

This is the ultimate meeting of water and forest, the perfect spot on California's premier Wild and Scenic Smith River. Imagine the day's end with fading light on crystalline water, woodland murmurs, a glass of wine, gentle conversation, aromas of dinner ... divine bliss. A conclave of forest deities would be right at home. Curt and Meg are consummate hosts. Their friendly, relaxed atmosphere enabled us to unwind and enjoy the natural beauty that surrounded us. I was born and raised on the Smith River and I am happy to declare that Thomas Wolfe was wrong, you can go home again. It was a wonderful visit and we plan to return.

We were in town to check out the redwoods, and are really glad we found and stayed at Bed and Bread Hiouchi. Curt and Meg made us feel really welcome, their house was awesome, and Curt's breakfasts/lunches/dinners were delicious.

We stayed in the double room upstairs - it was big and comfortable and the bathroom was huge!

One recommendation: order your lunches and dinners with Curt. It will allow you to maximise your time exploring the redwoods, and the food is nutritious, varied, tasty and generous.

Even if you're not in town to see the redwoods, this residence is a brilliant place to relax, read and enjoy the view over the Smith River (we've never seen such clear, turquoise water before).

Room Tip: The double room upstairs is easily big enough for two and offers plenty of privacy. We sneaked a pee...

This was a great B & B mostly for it's fabulous, unbeatable location along the river. As well, the rooms and bed were so comfortable and there is a huge bookcase full of reading options. Curt prepared an excellent breakfast - it was a huge spread. Too bad we didn't have more time to enjoy the area - that river looks like a great place to spend some time on. I agree with previous reviews about food choices in Crescent City - what a dismal hole.

This review is long overdue. We stayed here in the summer. Our family went fishing for four days in Crescent City and needed a place to stay that offered more room than a hotel. We are so happy we stumbled upon Hiouchi B & B. This place is a gem with a great riverfront location near Jed Smith state park. It was so clean, with everything you could need. Curt is a wonderful cook. Besides breakfast, you can also get dinner. Early rising fishermen can get food packed for them so the BnB still works for fishermen. You can relax on the huge deck with a beautiful view.
I would stay here anytime I am in the area.

My husband and I stayed at this bed and breakfast for two nights in November on our way to Palm Springs. Curt and Meg were really amazing hosts, the lower level in their home was a wonderful sanctuary on a long trip south. We were lucky enough to enjoy 2 fabulous breakfasts as well as a superb dinner of locally caught salmon with all the trimmings. We would not hesitate to recommend this spot to family and friends. If you are planning a trip to the Redwood Forest, do not miss staying with Curt and Meg and don't bother to eat anywhere else.

Room Tip: Try to arrive in daylight the view is amazing and the road a little narrow.

This is like visiting friends in their beautiful house on the river. Fabulous view, lovely accommodations, good food, good company, and access to hiking and river activities.
We very much appreciated Curt's willingness to fix us dinner. The options are abysmal -- forget about Crescent City for food.

Room Tip: Only 3 rooms in all, and one is for a single.
