“Smith River Retreat”
Reviewed 15 June 2014

We are new to the idea of B&Bs, so did not know exactly what to expect. Our plan was to hike in the Redwoods and to stay as close to the forest as possible. Curt and Meg's place was perfect for us in that we were just minutes away from the majestic trees and surrounded by the sounds of the Smith River. It is definitely off the beaten path and could be tricky to find in the dark, but well worth your exploration. We loved sharing stories with our hosts and housemates out on the deck under the stars almost as much as we enjoyed the fabulous trails suggested by Curt. We all gathered for dinner one night and were treated to a delicious Japanese/New York meal that we are still talking about:) If you are looking for unique and relaxing accommodations, Curt and Meg's spot is just what you need.

My wife and I drove down the Pacific coast from Seattle to Meg and Curts place. We had booked a three night stay there back in February. We arrived there and Curt had left a message for us that he was taking Molly, his dog for a walk and just to go in the house and make ourselves at home.
We had the upstairs room overlooking the beautiful green Smith river. We loved it right away. There is a sliding door that leads out to the deck with two chairs and a table where we occasionaly imbibed looking at the scenery.
Curt has an amusing sense of humour and is an interesting man to talk to. His wife Meg is a delight. We had a couple of nice chats with her. We walked the trails in the Redwoods, which are just minutes away. Our breakfasts were great, always a fruit dish along with the very adequate main meal. Curt offers lots of interesting info. for other places to see in the area.
I would, and have, recommended this place to our friends. Don't miss it if you are travelling to this area.
Thanks Meg and Curt, and you too Molly.

This was the last leg of a two-week road trip through California for us and it couldn't have been better. The upstairs room and bathroom we chose were perfect in every way. The bed was comfortable and there was a very nice tub/shower in the roomy bathroom, along with a sliding door that went out onto the deck. The view from the deck is gorgeous. Molly, the dog, was an added bonus for us.

Curt was a most gracious host and made us delicious breakfasts for the two mornings we were there. He also took the time to explain how to get to some great hiking trails so we could fully enjoy the redwoods, which was what we came to the area to see. We took a short drive to the coast so we could enjoy the beautiful pacific ocean and scenery.

We are looking forward to the day we can pay another visit to this area and stay at Hiouchi Bed and Breakfast again. This is the perfect, peaceful retreat. Our only regret is that we couldn't stay longer.

Curt and Meg run a great bnb. It's only about 10 miles from Crescent City, nestled in the woods along the Smith river. They take very good care of you, excellent hosts. The rooms are comfy and clean, clean bathrooms, great coffee and homemade breakfast, nice outdoor hot tub, wifi, no complaints. I'm definitely staying here again. Crescent City doesn't have lots of good eating so let Curt make you dinner and if the weather is nice, eat on the patio. Lots of nice hikes nearby, enjoy this place.

We were two couples traveling up the coast of California mainly to see the redwoods and decided to stay at this Bed and Breakfast in Hiouchi. The friends with us had never stayed at a B&B, so this was the perfect introduction. Curt is a wonderful host who is willing to provide information and suggestions to plan the day's activities. He also prepares a tasteful breakfast and a wonderful dinner upon request. Great location for easy trails in the redwoods and right beside the Smith River. Highly recommend!

We spent three nights and it couldn't have been more peaceful and friendly. Curt went out of his way to help us choose the perfect redwoods hikes AND provided shuttle service so we could drop our car at the end and get driven to the beginning! That alone allowed us to do what's normally described as three hikes in one, splendid day. The redwood groves in Jedediah smith are truly wonderful and you cannot get closer than this lovely place. I liked getting rained on in the rainforest, then having a warm dry place in the evening. Breakfasts were yummy, fresh-baked snacks and treats were unexpected and appreciated. I cannot recommend this place more highly - we will be back!

My husband and I had a great two-night stay at the B&B Hiouchi. Curt was not only a welcoming host with wonderful suggestions for area hikes, but also a great cook. Our room was located upstairs and was an en suite. The room was very cozy and Curt thought of every detail, including an electric blanket, and the bathroom was very large. It was a bit chilly, so we didn't spend much time on the deck, near the river or in the hot tub, but in the summer these must all be great options. Both breakfasts were extremely filling and also delectable. They consisted of fresh fruit, homemade bread, eggs and potatoes. Also, much to my husband's pleasure, fresh ground coffee was available (whenever we wanted) and plenty of it. We chose to have dinner at the B&B one evening (for a very reasonable cost). Curt made chicken, roasted vegetables, wild rice, salad and some fruit for dessert. We enjoyed the dinner and also the easy conversation with Curt. We would highly recommend this B&B for couples or small families. Molly (the dog) was also a welcoming host.
