Idlewilde by the River

Our group of four ladies has made a September trip to Estes Park for the past 14 years. We've stayed at Idlewilde by the River the past seven years and can't imagine staying anywhere else. Our cozy, log cabin is right on the river and off the highway. This year we saw elk come to the river right across from where we were sitting! Lloyd and Donna are warm and welcoming. They provide lots of little extras, like recommendations and coupons to the local restaurants, DVDs and books to borrow, board games, a hot tub....all to make our stay so enjoyable. We can't say enough good things about Idlewilde. And we can't wait to be back next year!

Room Tip: We've stayed in four or five different two bedroom cabins. They are all great locations and cle...

We had a cozy, private cabin right on the river, our porch could not have been closer to the water. We could hear the relaxing sound of the river throughout the cabin. Lloyd and Donna were very welcoming and helpful. The perfect place to relax and enjoy the lovely fall scenery. We will definitely stay again when in Estes Park.

We have stayed at the Idlewilde many times over the years. What always brings us back (other than the nice owners) is the location. We've looked at every other resort in the area and this is one of two where when you sit outside your cabin to look at the Big Thompson river the background is NOT the highway. Instead we are looking at a hillside where we have seen elk, mule deer, turkey, bears, and a variety of birds including American dippers. Much nicer than watching the cars go by!
The cabins are small and made from knotty pine during the middle of last century so if you are looking for a brand-new condo this is not the place for you. But everything is clean and well cared for and very nice.

I first stayed at this property in 1971 and when we moved to Colorado in 1991 one of the first things I did was check to see if it was still there. My husband and son and I started going there every spring and fall and my husband and I have continued to do so. Although we travel many places throughout a year, this is always our favorite getaway. The cabins are so cozy and being so close to the river and hearing the rippling water is so relaxing and peaceful!!! They are consistently clean and well equipped. Donna and Lloyd are the best! For us it is like going to visit family every year. They are so friendly and accommodating. We have stayed at several other places in Estes Park throughout the years, from cabins to the "famous hotel" and this will always be my first recommendation to anyone. Actually, I'd like to keep it a secret so that we can always get a reservation when we want it!

Room Tip: The cabins by the river are my favorite but any are close.

We stayed 4 nights in late August and we were delighted that we chose Idlewilde. I believe there are so few reviews here because this is a small 13 unit resort and most visitors are repeat customers. The pictures do not show just how beautiful the setting is and how charming the cabins are. The cabins are very clean and well maintained. It really was amazing to be right on the edge of a rushing river! As soon as we checked in and sat down next to our cabin, I looked up to see 2 deer standing across the river looking down at us. You won't be disappointed with these rustic, back-to-nature accomodations.

We just concluded four nights at Idlewilde and can't think of a more perfect setting. Lloyd and Donna were wonderful hosts and the setting is so relaxing. My husbands favorite thing to do was sit next to the river and read. We will be back!

Room Tip: Any one of the cabins is a good choice.

I have been to Idlewilde many times and it is such a great, quiet, place, by the river; I will never stay anywhere else when I visit Estes Park; close to the National Park entrance and the owners are so nice. The cabins are clean and well equipped and you can sit on the screened in porch on the porch swing and enjoy your morning coffee and see and hear the river
